"Caleb
Wheaton, an officer in the British Army, came here to locate. He had occasion to visit Antigonish, and was
obliged to make the journey in a canoe, with an Indian. He was appointed by the Government "to
look after vessels," and was coming from Halifax with his wife and family,
when the vessel struck on a rock near St Andrews.s Channel, west of Canso, and
sank. A boat had hastily been made
ready, in which Mrs. Wheaton, who was ill, was placed on a bed, and with what
few articles could be saved, they escaped to the shore. That night was passed in the woods. The next day, a sail appeared. The ship-wrecked party rowed out and hailed
the stranger, which proved to be a French vessel bound to Arichat. All assistance was refused till Mrs. Wheaton spoke
to them in French, a language with which she was quite familiar. This produced an immediate change. They tarried to render assistance, but
finding upon closer investigation that the forlorn party was really English
they hearlessly declined giving any help.
The magic influence of gold was next resorted to, and even a enemy's
heart was no proof agains this subtle agency.
A lavish transfer was soon arranged, and they were safely landed at
the Strait. During a visit to England Lieut. Wheaton was
invited to breakfast with the Duke of Kent and found 200 sovereigns under his
plate.

The
primary compilers of the descendants of Caleb Wheaton were Anne Warner
Hendsbee, brothers Daniel and Ronald Wheaton and Mary Marshall Bates. Additional sources appear as endnotes.
According
to record, Caleb Wheaton was an American by birth and was a Customs officer and
trader in Machais, ME. From 1744, he served in all the wars in America. In the
corps raised by Governor Shirley for the defense of the garrison at Annapolis
Royal, he was Lieutenant and Quartermaster. Subsequently, he was commander of
Fort St. George in Eastern Massachusetts. As a Loyalist, he was hunted from
place to place. Ordered by General Sir William Howe, he pulled down the old
North Meeting House in Boston, MA.
In
1761, Caleb was granted Lot 7 (44 acres), Div. 2 in Cornwallis Township. In
March, 1776 on the voyage to Halifax, NS with British troops from Boston, MA,
he and his family were taken prisoners on the brig Elizabeth and were detained
in prison for three months. From 1777, he was a Lieutenant in the Guides and
Pioneers.
Caleb
Wheaton had sixteen children. During the Revolutionary War five son's served in
the King's service, one of whom was killed in battle. At the end of the War,
two sons, John and Caleb, were granted half-pay of lieutenants. Another was a
pilot in the Royal Navy in Nova Scotia. The fifth son Joseph also a Loyalist was
taken prisoner and confined in the Concord Jail. There he was induced to join
the Americans and was given a commission as Ensign.
In
Correspondence dated 26 March 1788 anouncing Captain Caleb Wheaton's
death, W. Collins added that Caleb
"has" two wives living, one at Halifax who shared his sufferings and
hardships as a Loyalist, the other near Rochester, Kent, England."

"This
researcher has no proof that Mary, wife of Samuel Scott was a Wheaton. Because
one of her sons was Wheaton, it does seem logical that she was one of Caleb's
16 children.
This family is PURE CONJECTURE.
Samuel
was a St. Augustine Loyalist whose wife's name was Mary. When they arrived in
the settlement, there were three children.
According to Jost's Sketches and Essays, there is record only of Wheaton
and his wife Mary who had two children; Samuel, born in 1842 (Married Emmeline
Jane Carr) and Joseph, born 5 September 1844.
Samuel
was granted 300 acres in Manchester Township. In the years 1791 and 1804
Samuel, Farmer of the Gut of Canso was assesed 50lbs.
At
the time of the 1817 census taking, Samuel's household included 1 man over 50,

Information
from Mary BATES 24/4/2002
"I
found his name on a list of those individuals who were, in 1783, banished from
Sandwich, Masssachusetts. We call them
Tories, Canadians call them Loyalists"
Up to
this date, the first appearance this researcher finds of Caleb is his being
identified as a Tory/Loyalist and banished from the town of Sandwich, MA. Of
course, this was associated with the American Revolutionary War. After being a prisoner for 19 months, he
served as a Lieutentant in Lieutenat-Colonel Timothy Hierlihy's Loyalist
regiment that had been formed in March, 1777. This assignment was made by
William Howe in Philadelphia.
A
list of Nova Scotia Volunteers includes Lieutenant Caleb Wheaton, born in
America, Gentleman of Boston, served
eight years in the Provincial Corp.
Also, included in the Seconded Officers-British American Forces is
Lieutenant Caleb Wheaton, Guides and Pioneers, born in America, previously a
farmer from Boston, served seven years in Provincial Corps, seconded 25 January
1778.
In
1784, Caleb was granted 650 acres in the Bay of St. Lewis, Sydney/Guysborough,
County, NS. This was part of a 2,500 acres that were granted to both Caleb and
his brother John.
In a
document dated 30 March 1786 in Halifax, NS Caleb petitioned John Parr, Esq.
for some land and islands in Antigonish that had trees suitable for
shipbuilding and for seven acres on a point of land suitable for a shipbuilding
yard.
In
1792, he was put on half pay. That year, he
must have returned to Boston for his marriage to Sally Bryant which was
officiated by Rev. Samuel Parker at Trinity Anglican Church .
In
1804, he was assessed at Manchester/Guysborough. On 15 August 1804, Caleb
Wheaton of the Gut of Canso sold to Phebe Bryant, widow of the Town of Boston,
State of Massachusetts for 70pounds Halifax currency a lot of land formerly
owned by Thomas North bought of John Wheaton containing 50 acres on which there
is a house and barn. Witness: Robert Lowry, J. Wheaton. Signed: Caleb Wheaton,
Sarah Wheaton. Book C, page 346, registered 2 October 1804.
A
document dated 5 July 1813, signed by John Butterworth and John Higgins reports
a Lt. Caleb Wheaton uttering derogatory statements against Sr. George Prevost.
Caleb and other two were shipmates on a ship coming from Quebec and passing
between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 1812.
At
the time of the 1817 census taking, Caleb "Whitten"'s household
included 1 man over 50, 1 man between 16 and 49, 1 boy, 1 woman and 1 girl; 2
were Americans, 3 were Acadians.

Caleb
had a son John WHEATON who served as a Lieut, on the Royal NS Volunteers in
1784.
Information
from Mary Marshall BATES 24/4/2002
"A
listing of the Nova Scotia Volunteers
includes Lieutenant John Wheaton, born in America, a Gentleman, brother to the
Lieutenant afore-mentioned (Caleb), served seven years in the Provincial Corps.
"During
the first years of the establishment of Antigonish, the grog-shop sprouted into being as an
insttution in the land. A soldier of the name of Wheaton acheived the single
distinction of inaugurating the first grog shop in the county. This rum-shanty
attained deplorable notoriety in the place. Two men, MaGrath and O'Brien, were
drinking in the house one night. A quarrel arose between them, angry words
begat blows, when MaGrath in his frenzy seized a gun and shot O'Brien dead. On
the following day, MaGrath was arrested and sent to Halifax in charge of Nathan
Pushee. When the trial come on, no one appeared against him and he was allowed
to go free. The
scene
of the tragedy became known as Murder Point. This may have been Lt. John
Wheaton, a native of Sandwich, MA who did not draw any farmland, merely taking
town lots as if he planned on going into business."
NOTE:
This researcher questions whether the above was John or his brother Caleb.
Caleb, not John was a resident of Sandwich, MA. Also, Caleb does not appear in
the Poll Tax assesments.
John
and his brother Caleb were given a combined 2,500 land grant.
In
1793, Lt. J. Wheaton of Antigonish, Sydney county, NS was taxed 6 lb. 3.75 and
was noted as having livestock.
In
1804, John Wheaton and John Gwinn petition to build a grist-mill and a saw-mill
at the Head of Ship Harbor on the Gut of Canso. They asked for land to promote
the undertaking.
In
1810, Petitioner, John Wheaton asked for a lot formerly laid off for Captain
Barways who left the place without any improvements. Petitioner wished to build
a mill there. Under pretense of settling some families from Gurnsey and
building a saw-mill, Mr. Barvis (?) obtained a warrant for 2000 acres in 1809.
The land was surveyed but neither Mr. Barvis nor his agent had appeared to take
out a title. Repot of Crawley to Crowdy: 250 acres, lot 14, at the entrance of Joe's Cove, Gut of canso.
Plan.
At
the time of the 1811 census taking on Cape Breton, John Wheaton, Esq., Farmer
was living in Plaster of Paris Cove. His household included 1 male between 14
and 60, 2 males under 14, 1 famale under 14, 3 unmarried males and females, 4
cattle and 1 horse.
At
the time of the 1818 census taking, John, Farmer, married, age 60, born NS
(parents born in England) had been living
on the Island for 8 years. There were no children listed.
