Elgin Newspaper OBITUARY

                            EZRA S MILLS

Once a Business Man of Elgin Dies in City.

Ezra S Mills, a watch maker by trade, and one of Elgin's well known old settlers, died at 3 o 'clock this morning at 70 Yarwood Street. He had been ill for over a year.

Deceased was born in Buffalo, N.Y. and emigrated to Illinois in 1850. With the exception of t welve or fifteen years spent on his farm in South Dakota Mr Mills had lived in Elgin since co ming west. Two sons, Albert and Warren of Elgin, and one daughter, Mrs Almeda Lindsay, of Sou th Dakota, survive him.

Mr Mills years ago carried on the jewery and watch making business, and in connection therewith had a pump shop on the site now occupied (or very near the spot) by Muetteries west side lunch room. He lived in a frame house on Villa street where Mr L.D. Stowe's present residence stands. After the place was sold the landmark was moved to National street.

Although well advanced in years when the bicycle craze swept the land Mr Mills purchased an "ordinary" and was a conspicuous figure as he mounted on the high vehicle, as he rode about town. The wheel did him excellent service on the prairies, of South Dakota, where he left a fine farm.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 2:30 pm from the residence of his son Warren, No. 176 Wellington avenue.

Notes for Asa B COBB:

The unknown Asa! Marriage records of children all list Asa Cobb. Lillian's

lists Asa B Cobb. There is an Asa Cobb with a family in Elgin, ILlinois on the 1850 census ju st three blocks from the Wheaton's. Is this my Asa and he had two families? The 1860 census i n Praire du Chien, Wisconsin has an Asa living in a hotel. The Asa Cobb family that was in El gin on the 1850 census is living in Minnesota, but no Asa.

The story as told by my grandfather Charles Fremont Cobb was that one parent came from Vermon t and the other from Maine and they met on a wagon train and were married near Elgin, Illinoi s. Charles also said he remembered waking up during the night, looking down from the loft an d his Dad and another man were at the kitchen table eating. When his mother saw him she tol d him to go back to sleep. He remembered the sound of horses shaking and stamping their hoofs . It was the last time he saw his father. As time past and his dad was not home he asked hi s mother when was his dad coming home. She told him he was killed by indians. Sometime late r my grandfather was farmed out so he could learn the carpenter trade. He said "Lilly was jus t a baby when he left". He never mentioned Winnie who was born six years later. On Winnie's o bituary she names her brother Charles F. Cobb from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
