An Eliza WETTIN/John PITT marriage has been found, and given the wide variety of names used by this family we think it is the right Eliza.

Given this information we believe that Eliza PITT could be an older sister of George and she has been entered as such for the moment until further research shows otherwise.

We had not been able to find a Marriage for Mary Ann WHEATON and/or variants of this name.

Then, Army papers were found for a Samuel WHEATON, with mother Mary Ann Wheaton STONE.

It has been assumed that, particularly as Samuel was receiving education in an Industrial School at an early age, that he was illegitimate, and that his mother subsequently married an Unknown STONE.

Mary Ann WHEATON was born in Staffordshire, as was her son, so a search was made of the 1881 census for a Mary Ann STONE. A Samuel STONE, age 54, living in Heath Street, Wednesfield with wife Mary A STONE age 44 born Heath Town was found. Mary Ann WHEATON and several of her siblings were born in Heath Town, and their father Isaac and two of his children were living in Wednesfield in 1881. It is thought that apart from the discrepancy of 3 years in age, the other facts suggest that she is Mary Ann WHEATON. And given all the other incorrect information this family have given to Census Enumerators it is more than possible that the same thing was done here as well!

The age difference suggests a second marriage for Samuel STONE. Was Samuel WHEATON named after his putative father, Samuel and Mary Ann not being married at the time? There is the problems that Samuel's army records suggest he was born in December 1868, and the eldest child living at home in 1881 was Sarah age 12 so born before April 1869. Perhaps Sarah was a daughter of Samuel's first marriage. We are still endeavouring to find information about a previous marriage for Samuel which might help with this age query.

In endeavouring to find a marriage for Samuel STONE and Mary Ann WHEATON a marriage was found on the Free BMD web site in the December quarter of 1868 at Tynemouth, the spousw being Mary Ann WHEATLEY. "This seems too much of a coincidence to me. Apart from the slightly unexpected registration district, I hink my theory stands up quite well".

And, so all the ideas mentioned about have been entered here, until such time as other information is obtained.

Research Notes compiled from my own research, and discussions with another WHEATON researcher

There is no Civil Registration entry for a birth, or a marriage for a Margaret WHEATON and the following is how we came to decide that perhaps, Margaret, the wife of Humphrey FOSTER was a daughter of Isaac and belonged to this WHEATON family. Much of the reasoning is based on "educated guesswork" and as such can obviously be wrong. Research will continue, but we would welcome clarification from anyone connected to this family.

Our search began because living with Isaac WHEATON at Old Heath, Beardshore Bdgs, Wednesfield, Staffordshire in 1881 was Emma FOSTER, a grandchild. This would suggest that one of Isaac's daughters married a FOSTER. We have Eliza married to a PITT, Mary Ann to a STONE, Elizabeth to a LEWIS, Harriet to Joseph GRAINGER or George KINSEY and Sarah to Sam(p)son DARBY. We have no marriage details for Agnes.

A search of the FOSTERs in 1881 census did not produce an Agnes FOSTER, but throws up a strong possiblity that Isaac's FOSTER daughter could be Margaret FOSTER, born about 1844 at Heath Town and living in Church Street, Wednesfield, Staffordshire with her husband Humphrey FOSTER and their children. The ages of the children are compatible with that of Emma FOSTER who was living with her grandfather, Isaac.

Of the children born to Isaac WHEATON the last five, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Isaac, Harriet and Sarah, were all born in Heath, or Heath Town, Wednesfield, Staffordshire in 1840, 1844, 1845, 1848 and 1852 respectively. And Isaac and his family lived in Old Heath, Wednesfield in 1851, 1861 and 1871 at least. Unfortunately, although these census returns for Isaac have been found, Margaret does not appear on any of them. However, in 1851 Humphrey FOSTER was living with his family in Old Heath, Wednesfield; Isaac WHEATON and family were at Schedule No.5 and the FOSTER family at No.10

One of the biggest problems with this family is that they used so many variants of the name WHEATON and consequently many births, marriages and deaths are not registered as WHEATON. Of the children we are certain belong to Isaac (we have certificates, baptism records or they appear with members of the famly on census returns) there are no WHEATON registrations for the marriages of Eliza or George, no marriage or death entries for Agnes, (all three born before registration was introduced), no marriage for Mary Ann, no birth or marriage for Elizabeth, and no marriages for either Harriet or Sarah. So the fact that there were no birth or marriage entries for Margaret was not out of the ordinary. Also, many members of different families at various census dates were not living with their own parents but were in the same home as another member of the family, as was the Emma FOSTER who began this search.

From census returns it would appear that Isaac's daughter Elizabeth WHEATON was also born about the same time as Margaret FOSTER. Perhaps, as their births were so close together, or perhaps as Elizabeth and Margaret were even twins, Margaret was looked after by another family member. As yet a suitable Margaret, even without a surname, has not been found in a census for 1851 or 1861 on the Ancestry.com web site. Deaths for Humphrey and Margaret are also missing, as are details from the 1891 and 1901 census returns. Perhaps when the records are found it will enable us to decide whether our suppositions are accurate.
