WILL
Thomas
left property to his wife Abigail. Two
sons, Thomas and David, appear to have been left with the land and house. This would appear to be consisten with the
fact that both are buried in the nearby graveyard in Uppper Sackville. It appears that the other sons - Daniel and
Benjamin - were off founding the WHEATON settlement, which is probably why they
didn't get left the land and house.
This
will showing Thomas WHEATON (who married Jane CHASE, as one of the two brothers
inheriting the land and house is consistent with my family history that the
land had stayed in my branch of the family down to my grandfather's day
(through 1980s)

Notes
for Daniel WHEATON:
Note
from Jean SHERWOOD June 2001
"Daniel
started WHEATON settlement, New Brunswick"
Note
from Bill WHEATON 24/10/2001 sent via Jarel WHEATON
"Daniel
was the "founder" of WHEATON settlement. He and his brother Benjamin came down the
Petticodiac River from Sackville in search of new land and ended up just west
of Salisbury along the North River, which flows into the Petticodiac. Benjamin returned to Sackville".
Note
from Bill WHEATON 6/4/2002 concerning letter received from Vaughan
GELDART. He writes:
"In
1803 Daniel WHEATON and his brother Banjamin in their late teens with an Indian
Guide left Sackville to look for a place to start a farm. The Pericodiac River empties into the Bay of
Funday which has the highest tides in the world. Sackville is near the mouth of the river. The bay and the mouth of the ruver are the
shape of a large funnel so at high tide it comes up past Salisbury. The WHEATON brother must have come up river
in a birch bark canoe and stopped at the home of William WILSON, where Dan met
Ann, his future bride. The brothers and
guide then continued past where the village of Salisbury id now, and then a
portage trail through the forest to the North River a branch of the main river,
about 2 miles. They decided on a place
on the north side of the river and must have built a cabin soon after because
Daniel and Ann were married January 14, 1806.
Their son James married Elizabeth BROWN in 1845 and they had a daughter
Amanda.

I
have had information about David WHEATON and Martha WRY sent to me by two
people
The
first received had him as son of Daniel
The
second has him the son of Daniel
For
the present I have kept this David as son of Daniel until I receive further
information
Daniel
had a brother David who died in 1831 so making this David (born about 1800)
would solve the query raised above about the parentage of Rebecca and Mary
Jane.

Notes
for William WHEATON:
Details
from Marriage Register entry sent by Mark BROWN 30/6/2008
"Will
WHEATON and Mary BENNETT Registered Feb 14, 1829."
The
text reads,
"William
WHEATON of the Parish of Salisbury [MB: Wheaton Settlement is in Salisbury
Parish] and Mary BENNETT of the same place were married by banns this sixth day
of November, One thousand Eight hundred and twenty eight by me, Will. Scott ???
[MB: I can't make out the surname of the minister]."
Then,
the weird part, which could have been a mistake by the
"This
marriage was solemnized between us, Robert HARRISON, Mary BENNETT in the
presence of Robert BELL & Robert DUNCAN."
Robert
HARRISON? Where did that come from? I
didn't notice until I got back from the library, perhaps William is to be found
in some other marriage record? Or maybe
Robert HARRISON was the next person that the registar was going to be entering
into the register so he/she accidentally put his name into Mary BENNETT's
marriage record?
The
only Robert HARRISON I can find in the 1851 New Brunswick census is married to
a "Delilah."

Notes
for Arthur WHEATON:
Information
from Karen MITZEL 21/9/2003
My
grandfather Art came from New Brunswick to Manitoba to homestead. He didn't like it there and then journeyed
on to Saskatchewan and homesteaded near Landis, Saskatchewan. He was a successful farmer and had six
children, 3 sons and 3 daughters.
My
father was the youngest son, James and all three of the sons farmed.
My
cousin Jeff Wheaton currently farms and lives on the original homestead. My father's farm is about two miles from
the original homestead. My brother Erik
Wheaton farmed with my father until his unfortunate death two years ago. My brother left four sons to carry on the
Wheaton name
--
Brandon, Brock, Ryan and Riley.

John Munro5 BROWN (Elizabeth4 WHEATON,
Daniel3, Thomas2, James1)629
was born Abt. 1850 in Wheaton Settlement, New Brunswick, Canada629,
and died March 1949 in Sunny Brae, Canada Age 99629.
Notes
for John Munro BROWN:
Information
from Mark BROWN 10/6/2008
Wednesday,
30 March 1949, The Daily Times (Moncton)
Death
John M. BROWN in Sunny Brae
A
former mayor of Sunny Brae and one of the oldest residents in this area died
Monday in the person John M. BROWN Mr.
BROWN in his ninety-ninth year, had been in excellent health until recently and
despite his many years took an active interest in the Moncton suburb which he
led for nine years as mayor and in which he had resided since his youth.
Mr.
BROWN was born at Wheaton's Settlement, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William
and Elizabeth [WHEATON) BROWN and it was when he was about 25 years of age that
he left that district and moved to the outskirts of Moncton, to what is now the
present Mann property in the Lewisville Road.
A
contractor until his retirement a few years ago, the elderly gentleman was
highway structural superintendent with the provincial department of highways at
one time. As a private contractor he
helped materially in the building of the community in which he resides.
It
was about 70 years ago that he ran the first telephone lines in this district
when communications were established between the Moncton Post Office and the
residence of the late A. E. KILLAM.
A
link with the past, one of Mr. BROWN's treasured mementoes is a compass that
had been owned by his maternal grandfather, Daniel WHEATON. A part of New Brunswick's early history lies
behind the story of the compass.
(Information received 13/1/2009 from Mark BROWN. Apparently a granddaughter of John Munro
BROWN is in possession of the compass!)
Mr.
WHEATON had first come to this country from Great Britain and settled in Upper
Sackville. A few years later he walked
west towards Salisbury and settled in a lot which was later to become Wheaton's
Settlement. In 1812, after the necessary
period of land occupancy had expired Mr. WHEATON took his compass and started
walking to the province's capital, Fredericton, where his deed was registered. Then still travelling through the woods and
forests, he returned.
He
was a member of Prince Albert Lodge No. 26 I.O.O.F. In 1946 he was presented a long service
membership medal after having been a member of the lodge for forty-five
years. He attended the Baptist Church in
Sunny Brae when his health permitted.
Mr.
BROWN is survived by three sons: Edward and Horace, Sunny Brae; Clifford,
Montreal and a daughter Mrs. Frank F. MacDONALD, Sunny Brae. A daughter, Mrs. Jennie SMITH of Sunny Brae,
died a little over a week ago. Also
surviving are two brothers, Rollen R. BROWN, Smyrna Mills, Maine; Arthur BROWN,
Petitcodiac, and a sister, Mrs. Lorenzo ALWARD, Wheaton Settlement
(Intervale). A large number of
grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.
The
body is resting in Tuttle Brothers' Slumber Room. The funeral service will be held in the
Chapel Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
-----
As
the crow flies, Upper Sackville is about 65 kilometers from Wheaton Settlement
-- a long walk! Fredericton is even
further from Wheaton Settlement, about 115 kilometers in a straight line.
The
mentioned A. E. KILLAM was a prominent businessman and later politician, and
was a brother of John M. BROWN's aunt(-in-law), Mary Jane KILLAM.

George5 WHEATON (William4, Daniel3,
Thomas2, James1)643,644,645
was born Abt. 1846 in Saint John, Saint John County, New Brunswick646,
and died April 1906647.
He married Almira Jane STEEVES648 March 1871649. She was born 1844 in Salisbury, New
Brunswick, Canada650,651,652, and died November 1926653.

It
was thought that Almira's husband was George WHEATON as is shown on the 1881
Census. However, on the tombstone for
George and Almira's son, Allan John, his wife Mary Alberta HAMPTON and one
Percy G WHEATON it shows that Almira is also buried there, with another Allan
John WHEATON born 1846. Could this Allan
John be the husband of Almira, father of Allan John born 1875? Which would mean he was also called George as
is shown on the 1881 Census. More
research being undertaken. On the 20th
June further information was received showing that Almira's husband was George,
and she was buried with him at Old Cedar Hill Cemetery. Therefore, who was the other Almira?
