From Woodbury A View from the Beacon, Ursula W. Brighouse

In 1793 a dispute arose about the use of the Green, Nobody disputed LEE's Right to the soil of Bowling Green. It concerned the grazing rights which John WHEATON of Venmore said he had. On April 10th that year a young lad was minding 19 ewes and lambs on the Bowling Green when John WHEATON Came up to him and asked whose sheep they were. WHEATON's dogs, much to the consternation of the lad then chased the sheep out of the field and finally drove them into Exton Pound. To settle the matter the oldest inhabitants of Exton were called to give Testamonies as to how the field had been used during their memory. Was it common grazing land or was it not?

Thomas Cantlebury aged 76, says he remembers the Bowling a sporting place and the fact of someone's cutting furze there - he thinks twas by WHEATON's Granfer. Richard Hall was 63 and landlord of the New Inn at Exton. He remembers the remains of a shed or Bowling House standing. The Bowling Green was always since his time a Common. Next came John Braddick shipwright who lived at Exton House, then called Braddicks. It had been open, used for sports of Easter Monday and wrestling and always considered an Open Common. Surprisingly, the case was awarded to John WHEATON, subject to its ancient rights being observed.

Information from Ann GODWIN 29/11/2000

"My grandfather, Linsey Tom DENNER....told my mother the story about his grandmother's (Charlotte Wheaton DENNER) brother John WHEATON.  John had fallen in love with a "titled" lady and eloped never to be heard of again.  As a child I always imagined them galloping away into the mists of time in a coach and four! ......... I have always wondered if he went abroad, possibly to South Africa but it could have been equally USA, Canada or Australia.....As the matter of Charlotte CRABBs existence was glossed over in the story I also wonder if the "titled" lady was an embroidery".
