There
follows a report of an enquiry into the death of a child, Mark THOMAS. Apparently on Wednesday the 10th May Mary THOMAS took her nine year
old son, Mark, the one and a half miles to the Doctors who examined him and
gave him some medicien for Bronchitis.
On the following Sunday the Father, Robert THOMAS asked the Doctor to
visit his child as he was then very ill.
The Doctor again sent medicine, but did not visit. At 9 o'clock that evening a neighbour asked
the Doctor to call on the child but was told that the Doctor was not at
home. Mark THOMAS died the next morning.
The
Board censured the Doctor for not visiting the child. There had been no
previous complaints but if one occurred in the future then Dr WHEATON would be
asked to resign.
The
Charge of neglect was brought by Mr KITSON, Rector of Hemycock. Mrs Julia WHEATON (wife) gave evidence. Mr Edward FARRANT was Guardian of the Parish
Poor

salary of £20 per annum inclusive of all extra Medical Fees except for
Midwifery and Vaccination. The allowance
for these were 10/-d per case for the Midwifery and 2/6d or 1/6d (depending on
