From Woodbury A View from the Beacon, Ursula W. Brighouse

In 1793 a dispute arose about the use of the Green, Nobody disputed LEE's Right to the soil of Bowling Green. It concerned the grazing rights which John WHEATON of Venmore said he had. On April 10th that year a young lad was minding 19 ewes and lambs on the Bowling Green when John WHEATON Came up to him and asked whose sheep they were. WHEATON's dogs, much to the consternation of the lad then chased the sheep out of the field and finally drove them into Exton Pound. To settle the matter the oldest inhabitants of Exton were called to give Testamonies as to how the field had been used during their memory. Was it common grazing land or was it not?

Thomas Cantlebury aged 76, says he remembers the Bowling a sporting place and the fact of someone's cutting furze there - he thinks twas by WHEATON's Granfer. Richard Hall was 63 and landlord of the New Inn at Exton. He remembers the remains of a shed or Bowling House standing. The Bowling Green was always since his time a Common. Next came John Braddick shipwright who lived at Exton House, then called Braddicks. It had been open, used for sports of Easter Monday and wrestling and always considered an Open Common. Surprisingly, the case was awarded to John WHEATON, subject to its ancient rights being observed.

Information from Ann GODWIN 29/11/2000

"My grandfather, Linsey Tom DENNER....told my mother the story about his grandmother's (Charlotte Wheaton DENNER) brother John WHEATON.  John had fallen in love with a "titled" lady and eloped never to be heard of again.  As a child I always imagined them galloping away into the mists of time in a coach and four! ......... I have always wondered if he went abroad, possibly to South Africa but it could have been equally USA, Canada or Australia.....As the matter of Charlotte CRABBs existence was glossed over in the story I also wonder if the "titled" lady was an embroidery".

Notes for George John GILMOUR:

Information from Nerida RUTLEDGE 17/5/1008

George accompanied his father and two brothers, Alex and Erskine, when they took up a pastoral lease at Mr Burrell in the 1880s.  George then moved to western Queensland with his wife Clara (née PRIOR) by 1892 after returning from the failed sheep raising attempt in Central Australia.  He ran a property store on Comongin, a large pastoral property 150 miles from the railhead at Charleville and on the Bulloo River.  It covered 925½ square miles and in its first year produced 1200 bales of wool.  The annuel rental was seven pounds ten shillings.  In 1908 it carried 117,283 sheep, 914 cattle and 260 horses.  In 1914 the Queensland Government resumed 100,000 acres - this land becoming the townshup of Quilpie.  The store sold a variety of goods such as pantry items like flour, butter, rice, vinegar, treacle, oatmeal, dried fruits, tea, jam, etc. as well as stamps, stationery, candles, towels, knives and forks, pannikins, tents, water-bans, brooms whips, horse shoes, bridle leather, calico, picks and shovels as well as gun power, keresone, sheep dip, strychnine and bags of corn etc. etc.

Clara taught the piano to the daughters of the owners - the McCLEAN family.  George joined Erskine in the buying and selling of horses for about two years.  He purchased his own land in 1902 - Wallaninini - at Cuban, New South Wales and finally moved to Chatswood in 1906.  He died in 1930.

In the year after his father's death the family was somehow able to keep Edward at Prince Albert College in Adelaide.  During tht year Edward drowned in a tragic swimming accident on the Murray River.  The family could not raise a second lot of death duties so soon after the death of John so Edward's death led to the financial ruin of the GILMOUR family.

Poor Law Board, Whitehall, 15 July 1865

To: Mr F D W WHEATON, Medical Officer of Wellington Union, Culmstock, Wellington, Somerset.

There follows a report of an enquiry into the death of a child, Mark THOMAS.  Apparently on Wednesday  the 10th May Mary THOMAS took her nine year old son, Mark, the one and a half miles to the Doctors who examined him and gave him some medicien for Bronchitis.  On the following Sunday the Father, Robert THOMAS asked the Doctor to visit his child as he was then very ill.  The Doctor again sent medicine, but did not visit.  At 9 o'clock that evening a neighbour asked the Doctor to call on the child but was told that the Doctor was not at home.  Mark THOMAS died the next morning.

The Board censured the Doctor for not visiting the child. There had been no previous complaints but if one occurred in the future then Dr WHEATON would be asked to resign.

The Charge of neglect was brought by Mr KITSON, Rector of Hemycock.  Mrs Julia WHEATON (wife) gave evidence.  Mr Edward FARRANT was Guardian of the Parish

Poor Law Board received 21 November 1867.  Elected until 29 September 1868

The Board decided that as there was no Medical Practitioner resident in the Parish of Clayhidon that Mr F D W WHEATON should be re-elected as Medical Officer at a salary of £20 per annum inclusive of all extra Medical Fees except for Midwifery and Vaccination.  The allowance for these were 10/-d per case for the Midwifery and 2/6d or 1/6d (depending on length of journey and success of case) for the Vaccinations.

24 June 1868 A letter sent to Somerset House, London

Reports the death of Mr Francis Drake Walrond WHEATON, Medical Officer of part of District 2 and of District 4.  (and also about the same time that of his substitute Mr NOTT of Uffculme).

Amongst papers relating to the Lovelace Trust there was an application, accompanied by a sworn affidavit, from Julia Wheaton (wife of Francis Drake Waldron WHEATON) for a dowry for her daughter Anne Gatchel Farrant WHEATON.  It was believed that Anne died unmarried in 1926, as her death is recorded as WHEATON.  However the petition dated January 1880 says that she is at present employed as a governess in the family of General DRENTELN (probably wrongly recorded but that's what the document says) of St. Petersburgh, at a salary of £50 a year and that she is about to be married to Waldemar DRENTELN, a distant relative of the General and that Waldemar holds a very junior commission in the Russian Army.  Correspondence indicates that the dowry was to be given to a WHEATON relative and not released until the marriage had taken place.  The money (£100) was paid out of the trust funds so I assume the marriage went ahead.   Julia also records that she had only one other child, Francis, who was currently studying in Glasgow to be a surgeon.

Article from "Cycling" Magazine 1st May 1907

A Veteran of Note

We reproduce on this page two phtographs of Mr. C. WHEATON, the veteran cyclist referred to under "Out and About" on another page of this issue.  One shows him as he appeared at th time of the famous Brighton and back race in 1873, the other as he is to-day.  Mr WHEATON is now 84 years of age, and has, unfortunately, lost his sight, or he would be as keen a cyclist as ever.  He still takes much pleasure recalling his former performances on the high bicycle, particularly a ride from London to Winchester, which he carries out in his 57th year, accomplishing the journey in 6½ hours without leaving the saddle.  The veteran cyclis resides in North London, and rode regularly until a year or two ago.

Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that Leslie Norman WHEATON was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that Leslie Norman WHEATON was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Obituary sent by Noel WHEATON 20/2/2007

Mr P H WHEATON, who died at "Redhill" last week at the age od 62 was one of the most highly respected residents of the district.  He was the son of Mr. John WHEATON, who came to South Australia from Devonshire, and started as a gardener at Kersbrook, and was later among the first settlers in the Redhill district.  Mr P H WHEATON had been suffering from pneumonia, and was on the road to recovery, but had a relapse.

He was educated at Kersbrook School and at Prince Alfred College, after which he assisted his father at Redhill in Sheep-bredding and wheat growing.  He started on his own account on the Wollacoola property between Redhill and Snowtown.  In addition to success with sheep, he grew very fine wheat crops, but in later years his attention was chiefly directed to the breeding of stud and flock sheep. He won a name for the high standard of his sheep from many parts of the State, and at the time of his death he possessed a flock which was the admiration of all.  His sheep were not unknown in other parts of the Commonwealth, large drafts being dispatched to New South Wales each year.  On the death of his brother, Mr George WHEATON in 1899 Mr P H WHEATON removed from Wollacoola to the Hydon property at Redhill.  During his stay many improvements were made there.

He married Miss L TORR, of Crystal Brook in 1889, and leaves nine children - Mrs H GADD, of Crystal Brook, and Misses Phoebe, Gertrude, Doris, and Gwen WHEATON, and Messrs. Philip WHEATON, W. Stanley WHEATON, Cecil WHEATON and Keith WHEATON.  The eldest son saw active seervice with the Australian forces in Palestine and is now farming at Snowtown.  All the sons inherited the aptitude of their father for sheep to a remarkable degree, especially Mr W Stanley WHEATON, who has capably assisted in the management of the property during the last few years.

Mr WHEATON was always a loyal supporter of matters for the advancement of his town and district.  He was chairman od the Redhill District Council for several terms.  He was also chairman of the Soldiers' Welcome Home Committee, and was a Freemason.  He was held in high esteem in many parts of the State.

Does the following belong to this Philip WHEATON?

The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Wednesday 22 July 1908 p 9 Article

ANLABY CLYDESDALE

STUD.

THE DISPERSION" SALE.

(By our Special Commissioner.)

Anlaby and all roads leading thither presented a scene of great activity and bustle on Monday, on the occasion of the dispersal of Mr. Henry Dutton's Clydesdale stud. It had been wisely determined to conduct the sale on the estate, at the back of the home stables, and provide means of conveyance to and from Kapundx and Tarlee for all that desired to attend. Genuine sales of this character invariably attract a business-like crowd, and those who made the journey on Monday were literally representative of this qualification. Practical men from all parts of the country, from the West Coast, the South-East. the South, and Lower North, with a few visitors from Victoria, and a representative from Central Australia, constituted the attendance. It is generally conceded that when a stock owner decides upon unreservedly auctioning the fruit of his labors as an enthusiast, or of his enterprise as a capitalist, the occasion is one not to be ignored by farmers, stockbreeders, and all husbandmen. The opportunity for presenting themselves at the sale-ring in the capacity of prospective buyers is too good to be missed. And so it was on this occasion.

Messrs. Elder, Smith. & Co. who conducted the sale and all arrangements connected therewith, had as they thought made ample provision to cope with the estimated traffic. The arrival of the tightly packed passenger train from Roseworthy to supplement a big detachment from Tarlee put a different complexion on the position, and, though doubtless an agreeable and none the less welcome surprise to the firm's auctioneer, Mr. A. Richardson this necessitated further requisitioning of vehicles and redistribution of loads., The weather was not altogether in favor of a big attendance, as a keen cold wind blew boisterously throughout, bringing along occasional squalls of rain and hail. However, it takes a good deal to damp the enthusiasm of those who live much out of doors and have a keen eye for either a horse or a bargain. The sale was conducted in the open, in a capacious ring off the stallion boxes, with pens and races conveniently arranged and temporarily constructed for the occasion. In this and in every other respect the arrangements for the sale were carefully planned, and reflected credit on all concerned. Not the least pleasing feature from a spectacular point of view was an imposing parade at noon of the sires and brood mares in pairs. This gave a preliminary flourish to the proceedings and acted as an introduction, after a welcome discussion of luncheon, to the more serious of part of the entertainment.

Notwithstanding attempted interference on the part of the elements it was evident soon after Mr. Richardson had opened theproceedings in his capacity as auctioneer that brisk bidding and good prices would be the order of the day.

There follows information about animals, their costs and who bought them including:

"Mr. Philip Wheaton, of Redhill, was a consistent bidder throughout, but when competing for the rising three-ycar-old fillies met a doughty opponent in Mr. T. McCourt, of Mllicent." But he was successful...

(We were given the name of Jane LOUDON as wife of Alexander, but I have now seen a copy of the marriage certificate for Alexander and Elizabeth MARTIN dated 1880.  At present I have left Alexander with two wives.

I have now received the death certificate for Alexander which lists two wives, but neither are Jane LOUDEN.

Her details were born 1856 Geelong, Victoria Australia, where she married and she died in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Given the information we have now received I have deleted Jane LOUDEN as wife of Alexander)
