Information from Joy WHEATON

"Emigrated to South Australia in the barque "Gratitude" of 271 tons, arriving in August 1848 at Port Adelaide.  There wre forty-four passengers and a large cargo.  Two were cabin passengers, 15 intermediate and 27 were classed as steerage, including "Philip WHEATON and wife and three children" and John WHEATON and wife, Mary Ann Carter WHEATON".  The latter WHEATONS were also from Devonshire, but apparently unrelated to Philip.  A barque is a three, four or five-masted sailing vessel.  It carries square sails on all masts except the aftermost, on which the ails are rigged fore and aft, in a line with the run of the ship.  As we know that the family travelled steerage class, their fare would have been between £15 and £20 sterling".

Name of Ship "HARTLEY"

Name of Captain R FEWSIN /Thomas FEWSON

Date of Arrival 20/28 October 1837

Port of arrival Port Adelaide

(departed Gravesend)

From Russell WHEATON

Rex WHEATON's "Faces North", a family history of Nathaniel and Mary WHEATON, who emigrated to S.A. in 1837, gives Nathaniel's date of baptism as the 23th September 1810 and Date of death as 22nd March 1849.  DCW gives Date of death as 24th March 1849.  DCW gives year of birth as 1810.  Rex believes Nathaniel's father was also a Nathaniel WHEATON, baptised 6th September 1775 at Sidbury Independent and married to Sarah.  He died about 1812.  This is shown in the WHEATON book.  Rex also shows Nathaniel as having brothers John, baptised 27 December 1807 at Sidbury Independent and Philip, baptised 13 October 1808 at Sidbury Independent and died 1875, just as in the WHEATON book.  Although Rex mentioned William and Elizabeth WHEATON he does not show where their place on the family tree is.  He does show what he believes is a photo of them.  This was supplied by Mrs Betty CORNISH, 7 Ralph Avenue, Belair, South Australia.  It is not clear who she is.

Nathaniel lived at Hackney.  He died of tuberulosis.  Another sources says he died of consumption.  Buried on the company (The South Australian Company) farm at Hackney with son James.  Roger's notes: b 7/10/1811.

Supplement to "The WHEATON Story" gives Nathaniel's DOB as 27 October 1811 and states that Nathaniel and Mary left Gravesend, London in the barque Hartley on the 17th May 1837 and arrived in Port Adelaide on the 28th October 1837.

Nathaniel was farm supervisor, a position he took over from a Mr William Beavis RANDELL after working for him for seven years.  Believed to be a cousin to a Nathaniel WHEATON who lived in South Road.  DCW: 1840-1849.

Rex's book has a picture of the home at 61 Hackney Road.  When Mary died in 1874 the house was sold for 1,000 pounds.  It was auctioned on the 8th August 1984 for $350,000

Further information available in copy of letter originally sent from Rex WHEATON to Joy WHEATON.  A copy of this letter was sent to me by Michael BROWNING and can be found in the WHEATON "Information from others" folder.

Notes for Mary Susanna WHEATON:

Obituary from Russell WHEATON

The Later Mrs Cornish, Senr.

Mrs J Cornish, who quietly passed to her rest on Friday Oct 16 (1925), in her 85th year, at her late residence near Stansbury, was the widow of the late Pastor James Cornish, who died on Oct 22, 1902.  Mrs. Cornish was born near Adelaide in 1841, and was the second daughter of the later Nathaniel Wheaton, who came to South Australi early in 1837, only a few months after the Proclamation of the Colony.  Losing her father by death when she was quite a child, deceased with her mother, a brother and two sisters experiences many of the hardshis of the early settlers.  Mrs Cornish could tell many thrilling and interesting experiances of the early days of Adelaide.  She was married in 1862, and with her husband carried on farming near Stepney.  In 1875 they moved to York Peninsula and settled on their farm near Stansbury, where she resided till her death. Her bright, consistent Christian character and genial disposition bore evident testimony of the unward grace and faith which she, with her devoted husband, possessed, and when the latter was called to the Ministry of the Church, she lovingly fulfilled her part in the great work, and was an active member of the Christian Church up to the time of her death - a period of over fifty year.  Of her family of twelve (eight sons and four daughters), seven survive her, viz P A Cornish, Saddleworth; A W, J W and A Cornish, Stansbury, Miss Cornish (Nell*) Stansbury, Mrs W Brook, Forestville, and Mrs G Nankivell (Bessie*), Georgetown.  She also leaves 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Notes for Fanny WHEATON:

There appears to be some confusion about Fanny and her husband

Information from Russell WHEATON

Neville shows a Sophie as the wife of Joseph JACKMAN

Mum's small tree and photocopy show Fanny living to 12/5/1935

Book 1 page 130 gives dob as 7/10/1845 (where not recorded).

Joseph: DEB may be too early - of not, second wife Fanny was about 32 years younger.

Photocopy gived DOB as 12/1/1843

A letter from Rex WHEATON dated 3/8/99 says Joseph had three wives; Lydia, died 1861, Ann died 1874 and Charlotte who died 1901.  Was one of them known as Fanny?  Rex WHEATON in a letter dated 1/9/99 doubts that Fanny WHEATON, born 12 May 1845, was Joseph's third wife.1`

NINETY YEARS OF AGE

CAREER OF MR. J. PEDERICK

Mr. John Pederick, Gawler's oldest resident, celebrated his ninetieth birthday last Monday. Born at Cornworthy. Devonshire; he came to South Australia, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pederfck in the sailing ship Brightman in December, 1840. They secured a home in Gouger Street, where they remained three years. Mr. Pederick, sen, bought a block of land at Plympton, where he engaged in dairying and boot making for 10 years. The Crown then opened up land in the north, and Mr. Pederick. sen secured a block four miles east of Two Wells, which he named Pirie Park, and which is now held by nephews of Mr. John Pederick. In 1860 the father bought a property, "Woodburn." at Gawler River, and this, together with another farm, known as "Stonenill," was worked in partnership. .

The father and two sons went to the Victorian diggings in 1851, and in 1863 Mr. John Pederick joined in the gold rush in the South Island of New Zealand, but the rigors of the cold made mining difficult, and after twelve months Mr. Pederick returned. In 1866 he married Mary, daughter of Mr. Philip Wheaton. of Plympton, and established his home at "Stonehill, where the whole of their married life was spent, and a family (seven boys and four girls) were reared. All of them are living. Mrs. Pederick died in April, 1915. and in July, 1920, Mr. Pederick and his two daughters re moved to Gawler.

Mr. Pederick has over 60 years' association with the Stonehill Mthodist Church, and was a Sunday-school teacher for 50 years and a society steward for 40 years. He is still a trustee of the church. He is a regular attendant at the old folks' reunion at Glenelg on Commemoration Day, having missed only one gathering in many years. Mr. Pederick has an intimate knowledge of the Two Wells district. As a boy he constantly travelled it in its virgin state, the only inhabitant in the whole area being a shepherd. Mr. Pederick has many reminiscences, particularly regarding aborigines, and declares that the name of Black Forest arose from their constant camping in that vicinity.

His family comprise Messrs. W. J., W. T., and H. J. Pederick (Wagin, Western Australia), R. O. and P. W. Pederick (Kyabram, Vic toria). N. J. Pederick (Angle Vale), the Rev. E. A. Pederick (Hamley Bridge), Mrs. J. W. Enniss (Melbourne). Mrs. E. E. Parham (Gawler Railway). Misses A. A. and M. T. Pederick (Gawler). There are 34 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Pederick also has two sisters living Mrs.! Roberts, of Gawler, and Mrs. Mankey, of Prospect.

Mr. J. Pederick

Philip and Sarah had 4 sons and 4 daughters - from "The Wheaton Story"

Rex Wheaton's letter of the 3/8/99 stated that Philip is buried just inside the main gate of West Terrace Cemetery with his daughter Stella.  The only marking is a slab with "Stella" on it.  Rex WHEATON's book states go Right and North in West Terrance Cemetery to B10 or B15.  He is buried at lot 19 with youngest daughter Stella Carrie 1883-1900.  However, the database shows Stella was the third youngest child (8th of 10 children)

Opened the first general store at Victor Harbour in 1866 and sold it (to) David BELL in 1891 and is still (as at 1982) still in the same building opposite the Grosvenor Hotel.  Victor Harbour was reached from Adelaide by bullock truck.  The first train line in Australia was the one to Victor.  The stor sold food to workers on the line.  When the line was completed, they left and he was broke and so came to the city and worked for the Government as Inspector of State Children.  Lived at Westall Street, Hyde Park.  The names and relationships of Philip's descendants were provided by Sarah WHEATON on 15/12/84 and the supplement to the WHEATON Story.  The photocopy gives 13/8/1839-2/5/1913

Port Victor, November 15 - Much regret is felt here at the approaching departure of Mr. Philip Wheaton, who has resided here for 25 rears. He has sold his business to Mr. D. Bell, of Strathalbyn. Mr. Wheaton's services to the district as the secretary of the Institute, as an officer of the Congregational Church, and superintendent of the Sunday-school will make his removal a great loss to the residents.

The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Friday 1 July 1910 p 6 Article

Mr Phillip Wheaton retired from his position as chief enquiry Officer of the State. Children's Department on Thursday under the provisions of the Septuagenarians Act. His father came to the State in the early days under agreement with the South Australian Company, but he died when his son was only about eight or nine years of age. Mr. Philip Wheaton, was born in Hindley-street in August.-1839. He was a storekeeeper at Victor Harbor for some considerable time, and about 13 or 14 years ago he came to Adelaide. In March, 1900. he was appointed Inspector of State Children, but about three years ago. while travelling, he contracted a severe cold. Pleurisy set in, and an operation was imperative. Since then he has not been in the best of health, and he was appointed enquiry officer. Mr. Wheaton said yesterday, before leaving his office:-"Ever since my father died I have had to battle for myself. I have been working 60 years, and think it ¡s time I had a bit of a holiday." Yesterday afternoon Mr. Wheaton was presented with a handsome armchair by his fellow-employees in recognition of his sterling character.

Notes for Gladys Myrtle WHEATON:

Gladys was engaged to Graham BARRETT-LENNARD.  Originally I received information that he had been shot down over Germany.

However, in August 2009 I received a message from Malmo, Sweden where Anette Sarnas, Archives assistant from the Malmo City Archives was researching Graham BARRETT-LENNARD whose grave was in Malmo, Sweden.  On asking her for more information she replied that:

About Francis Graham BARRETT-LENNARD; he and his aircraft went missing on a minelaying ops to Stettin Bay in Germany on     11/12 September 1944. On 15 October his body was found washed ashore in southern Sweden and he was buried in Malmo on     19 October 1944. The other men in his crew are still missing. The Stettin flight was his 13th ops. "Gray" as he was known to his       family, was a wireless operator in 90 Squadron, which flew Lancaster bombers.

Most likely they were shot down by a German nightfighter over the Baltic coming back from the ops, although nothing can be said         for certain

Ken's notes of January 1998 surmise that he was either a Railway Engineer or a Foreman as he gave Ken's father three books on track work.
