Information
from Joy WHEATON
"Emigrated
to South Australia in the barque "Gratitude" of 271 tons, arriving in
August 1848 at Port Adelaide. There wre
forty-four passengers and a large cargo.
Two were cabin passengers, 15 intermediate and 27 were classed as
steerage, including "Philip WHEATON and wife and three children" and
John WHEATON and wife, Mary Ann Carter WHEATON". The latter WHEATONS were also from
Devonshire, but apparently unrelated to Philip.
A barque is a three, four or five-masted sailing vessel. It carries square sails on all masts except
the aftermost, on which the ails are rigged fore and aft, in a line with the
run of the ship. As we know that the
family travelled steerage class, their fare would have been between £15 and £20
sterling".
