Information from Ruth HYDE sent to her by a Genealogist from Northumberland, possibly in 1962

"The south eastern part of Northumberland was a very rich coal mining area - there were colleries & villages only about 4 or 5 miles apart.  the 80 or so coal mines were all privately owned by about 9 or 10 land owners and in the mid 1870's the coal miners went on strike for more money.  The strikes at virtually all the colleries lasted for weeks and some mines for months.  Out of frustration the mine owners sent their agents to the southwest of the country where the tin mines were going through tougher times.  Cornish tin miners were supplemented by the coal miners of adjacent counties.  Gloucestershire has never been known as being a coal mining country - their mines would be small and only a few of them.  All were offered good money, house provided and travelling costs.  Hundreds came and when the local miners eventually went back to work the relationship between the two sets of miners was not very corial.  Eventually things calmed down and the "outsiders" were accepted resulting in marriages between locals and the newcomers.  Many name of Cornish or southwest of the country appear in the S.E.Northumberland's phone directory.  There is only one coal mine in the whole of the county."

(There reference to Gloucestershire related to another member of Ruth HYDE's family)

On the birth certificate of her son Albert she is shown as "Sarah Ann WHEATON, late WILLS formerly SCOBELL".  I took that to mean that she had been married before she married John. She could not have been very old when she lost her first husband, if that is the case.  However, on the 1901 Census there is a granddaughter, Alice WILLS, so the idea that Sarah Ann was married before seems to be correct.

Sarah Ann SCOBELL first married John MILLS he was married previously to a John WILLS in the December quarter 1859 in the Tavistock District, Devon.  They had 4 children before he died in Bet. October - December 1869 in the Launceston District, Cornwall Age 37

Sarah Ann WILLS née SCOBELL then married John WHEATON.  They had 6 children before he died Bet. October - December 1893 Tynemouth District, Northumberland Age 69

Sarah Ann WHEATON née SCOBELL formerly WILLS then married John ROBSON Bet. October - December 1894 Tynemouth District, Northumberland.  They had no children

One of the sons of John WILLS and Sarah Ann SCOBELL married one of the daughter of John WHEATON and his first wife.  One of the sons of John WHEATON and Sarah Ann SCOBELL went to America to see Bessie STANTON, one of the daughters of John WILLS and Sarah Ann SCOBELL.  There were therefore close links between the children of both of the families of Sarah Ann SCOBELL.  The John WILLS family would not appear in a Descendant Report, so has been included here.

He was a Labourer, age 30, and was travelling with a Samuel STANTON age 35 also a labourer.  Only other information was that they had not been to the USA before.  The Edwin STANTON whose information is in this record had a brother Samuel who would have been 35 in 1887.

Although no Bessie with him - she has now been found travelling in November 1888 - it would seem likely that this is the right Edwin.

* Pennsylvania is the right place to correspond with the census information

* According to where the children were born he/they went to America some time between 1887 and 1892, so that fits.

He called one of his children Samuel which was the name of the STANTON with whom he travelled.
