Information
from letter written by Mr William Anstice WHEATON 1/6/1895
"This
Mr John WHEATON was avery genial hospitable man, a good and prosperous
farmer. The first time I recollect going
to his house was when they resided at Clapperntale, a little more than a mile
from Ottery...situate in Sir John KENNERWAY's park. My Uncle John WHEATON afterwards removed to a
grand house about half a mile nearer Ottery and called "Cadhay House"
but still keeping the same farm. The
house occupied three sides of a square with stable and out-buildings, four
side, having a grass plot in the centre.
One of the wings was made into a separate house which he let to another
family of WHEATONs who also sent to ottery Chapel like good WHEATONs. I went once to an exhibition at Southampton
and noticed a piece of finery made of Honiton lace which had been worn by a
lady on the occasion of her wedding in Queen Elizabeth's reign from
"Cadhay House in Devonshire", that being the house at which I had
just been staying with my uncle and aunt.
At one time this uncle John WHEATON had three young gentlemen in his
house for him to instruct to agriculture"
