PROBLEMS!!!!

There are two Albert WHEATONs in Devon in the late nineteen hundreds, one born in 1863 and the other in 1876

The Albert who was born 1863 was blind on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns.  On the 1901 census a blind Albert WHEATON born 1863 has a wife named Sarah A. born 1855.  In the March quarter of 1897 there was an Albert WHEATON/Louis Archibald CROSS/Sarah Ann HINE/Florence Emily PARKIN marriage in Exeter.  It was therefore thought that that the 1897 marriage to Sarah Ann HINE belonged to this Albert.  We also have a Sarah Ann WHEATON death which could fit, although the age at death makes her born 10 years earlier than that shown on the 1901 census. However, age differences like this are quite common! (See notes for Sarah A regarding age queries).  After the death of Sarah Ann Albert WHEATON (father Henry) remarried in 1925 as a widower, to a "Private Nurse" nearly twenty years younger himself.  All this information appears to fit together satisfactorily.

The other Albert, the one to whom these notes are attached, was born in 1876.   I have not been able to find a suitable Albert on the 1901 census despite searching for just "Albert b 1876 +/- 5 years born Devon", Alberts in Broadhembury, Alberts in Exeter besides, of course, Albert and Bert WHEATONs.  When this Albert died, his executor was his wife, Florence WHEATON so I also did a countrywide search for Albert with wife Florence with no success.  In searching for an Albert/Florence (no surnames) marriage, the only one that appeared was the one in the March quarter 1897 to Sarah Ann HINE/Florence Emily PARKIN which we had already decided belonged to the Albert born 1863 where he married Sarah Ann HINE!  We do have a death for a Florence WHEATON which could be the widow of this Albert, but if hers was the 1897 marriage she would have been only 15 when she married.  However, the Albert/Florence marriage cannot be the 1897 one as we cannot have two different Alberts marrying the two brides shown for the 1897 marriage! (And I have found now Louis A and Florence E CROSS in St Austell in 1901, these were the other couple for the 1897 marriage, so Albert could not have married Florence Emily PARKIN).

There is another Albert WHEATON marriage in the December quarter of 1892 in Exeter to Annie ARSOTT or Jane SHARLAND but being born in 1876 this Albert would only have been 16 at the time of the 1892 marriage.  The other groom for the 1892 marriage was Arthur John CAMPFIELD and I have found him with wife Annie born Exeter in Bristol in 1901.  So, it looks as if Albert married Jane.  I have no spare deaths or remarriages for a Jane WHEATON, and I have no Albert/Florence marriages (other than the 1897 one).

On the other hand, the 1892 marriage could be a first marriage for the blind Albert born 1863, he would have been 29 which would seem quite possible given that he was at home with his parents in 1891.  However, I have only one Jane WHEATON death between in 1892 and 1897 when he married Sarah Ann HINE, and the Jane death is in Sidmouth and fits burial details we obtained from the parish register.

Here, I start going round the circle again!

If anyone can help solve this puzzle I should be delighted to hear from them

On the 1881 Census an Albert is shown as being age 25 so born in 1856.  This does not correspond with the age we have for this Albert.  However, it would seem that both men were blind, and we therefore believe they are probably the same person.
