Obituary in the Lafayette County Democrat, Darlington, WI, Friday, September 15, 1876

Death of Mrs. Emeline West Died in Gratiot, Sept. 2, 1876, Emeline, wife of James West, aged 54 years and one month. Mrs. West came to this state with her now bereaved husband in 1842, and they have ever since lived on or near their present home, where they have toiled and labored

together amid the trials and privations incident to pioneer life, to gain a competency for

themselves and children. Mrs. West was a woman possessed of a kind and maiable disposition, ever mindfual of the wants and pleasures of others, always doing all she could to lighten the

labors of her husband and make home all its inmates cheerful and happy. About four years ago

she gave her heart to God and her hand to the church; from which time she has been a faithful and devoted Christian - enduring her long and tedious illness with patience and christian resignation, ever trusting in her Saviour for grace to sustain and keep her to the end. A few weeks before she breathed her last, when worn and weary, she said: "Thank God, I am almost HOME , almost done with suffering, almost done with the pain; I am almost HOME." Thus at last trusting in her Savior. Surrounded by her husband and children, her mother, and two sisters, and a few neighbors, she passed away. She leaves her friends the rich legecy of a christian example, which if followed, will insure to them a reunion in the mansions above. The funeral ser vices were held at the dear old home. Probably the largest attendance ever known in Gratiot.
