I have come to the conclusion that Jane HAMMET who married Thomas was, in fact, a Jane HAMMOND. Research has shown that HAMMET is the "friendly" form of HAMMOND. Her birth place is shown as Iddesleigh on the 1851 census, and her age always tallies with 1761/62. Iddesleigh baptisms showed NO baptisms for HAMMETs for those years but did show the following:

Bap. January 14th, 1759 John, son of Richard HAMMOND and Sarah

Bap.September 19, 1760 Betty, daughter of Richard HAMMOND and Sarah.

Bap. September 19th, 1762 Mary, daughter of Richard HAMMOND and Sarah

Bap. July 23, 1764 Sarah, daughter of Richard HAMMOND and Sarah

Bap September 12th, 1766 Jane, daughter of Richard HAMMOND and Sarah

Given the naming traditions, we have the following children of Thomas WHEATON and Jane:

Nathaniel (grandfather?), Thomas (father). Elizabeth (could this be Thomas's mother?), John, (this is where my theory isn't quite so straightforward, but might he be for Jane's grandfather?), Richard (mother's father) Sarah (mother's mother) etc etc

From this, might we be verging finding Thomas's parents if we looked for a Nathaniel and an Elizabeth? I have had a strong feeling for some while that Thomas's dad was named Nathaniel. This would also support your theory when you describe a certain Nathaniel Wheaton as possibly being his brother. In this case, his elder brother. Unfortunately, Nathaniel is a VERY popular name among the WHEATONs.

Have seen that Nathaniel's eldest daughter was an Elizabeth. If she was named for his mother, then that is another very tenuous link to Thomas being the son of a Nathaniel and an Elizabeth. But all very vague.

Bessie Jane WHEATON married James SHIPTON. James turned out to be quite a rascal. After he got out of the RMLI he left Bessie and their two small sons and sailed to New York, destination, Massachusetts. I have his military record. My father never knew what happened to his grandfather, but thought he may have died in the Johnstown Flood of 1889 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, but there is no info on this. As you know Bessie married Jeremiah Gilbert and they eventually settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

You will note that there is no James Thomas, born 1877 - or could it be that they called their son Thomas and not James? There is no James WHETEN/WHEATON/WHETON etc on the 1881 census. Nor are there any other WHETEN/WHEATON families in Roath. Nor are there any civil registration entries for future events for any of this family, except for a marriage for Thomas in 1906

* 1891 census The family at 22 Comet Street are names WHETTERS, shown as this on the actual census return. However, the names, ages, occupations all match those of this family except the wife, now shown as Maggie.

* 1895 28th December - James Thomas WHEATON and Mary Jane PRICE had a son William George at 22 Comet Street, Roath. Birth entry in the Civil Registration Index and certificate obtained. Marriage details and subsequent family information available. Despite the change of parents' names it would seem that this could be the same couple. Therefore, until proved otherwise it has been assumed that this is the case. (The informant of the birth was M J BROWN. There was a Mary BROWN in Roath in 1901 who could have been the oldest daughter in the family)

* 1901 James T WHETON (50) born Guernsey, Channel Islands, his wife Jane (46) born Chepstow, and children Ernest (?), Madeleine (14), Eliza (12), Richard (9), William (5) and Walter(2) WHETON all born Cardiff were living at 33 Comet Street, Roath. There are only birth registrations for Madeleine, Richard and William, a death registration for Richard, and marriage entries for William and Walter with subsquent family details. There are no other WHEATON/WHETON or variants of the name in Roath in 1901.

Given that the ages of James T and Jane correspond with the Thomas and Jane on the 1881 census, that the T appears to stand for Thomas, that both Janes were born in Chepstow, and both families lived in the same street when there are no other people with a similar name in Roath at either date, it has been assumed that they are the same family.

I am still puzzling as to why a 17 year old Trumpeter should join the big guns of the RGA and not the Devon Regiment, which seems to have been the Regiment of choice of everyone else.

This may give credence to the story that he joined up, and was then brought back by his father, as being under-age. The story is that he then ran off and joined up elsewhere. Not a good thing to do, as he was one of the 86000 killed in the first 3 months of the war, whereas 4 of our five relations survived in the Devons.
