In 1891 a William DAVIES is living with James T or Thomas WHEATON as his step father.  It has therefore been assumed that Eliza married again.  There is an Eliza WHETEN/William DAVIES marriage in the June quarter of 1874 in the Cardiff District.  This does fit in with the death found for Thomas.  All needs to be verified.

Notes for Mary Ellen "Ellen" WHEATON:

We have no evidence that Ellen belongs to this family other than she was born in Slimbridge and fits.  Also she was working for a WARREN family, and this WHEATON family has several links with people with the surname WARREN.  There are no Civil Registration entries for Ellens, Eleanors, Ellenors or Elinors which would fit this Ellen.  Further research required.  Which has now been done!  There is no birth entry for Mary Ellen, shown on the 1861 census as Mary E, on the 1871 and 1881 as Ellen and who married as Mary Ellen!

November 2005

After receiving a message from Helen BAILEY who is connected to the WARREN family it was decided that Ellen probably married as Mary Ellen WHEATON, to a John WARREN, brother of her brother John's wife Ada Catherine WARREN.

21.  James Thomas or Thomas4 WHEATON (Thomas3, Nathaniel2, Thomas1)614,615,616 was born Abt. 1851 in Alderney (1851), Holding (1881), or Alderney (1891) or Guernsey (1901) Channel Islands617,618,619, and died Unknown in (no suitable death entry as WHEATON).  He married Sarah Jane, Jane, Maggie, or Mary Jane PRICE620,621 Bet. January - March 1875 in Cardiff District, Glamorganshire as James Thomas WHETEN and Sarah Jane PRICE.  She was born Abt. 1857 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire (see notes regarding name)622,623, and died Unknown in (no suitable death entry as WHEATON).

Notes for James Thomas or Thomas WHEATON:

Addresses

1851        Braye Village, Alderney, Channel Islands as James Thos WHETON age 1 month

Lodging with them was William PERKINS (22) Unmarried Labourer, James WHETON (28)

Unmarried Labourer and Henry BURTON (50) Inmarried Mason all born England

1861        Braye St?. Alderney, Channel Islands as Thomas WHETON

1871        Could not find on the 1871 Roath, Glamorganshire Census

1877        26 Comet Street, Roath, Glamorganshire

1881        26 Comet Street, Roath Glamorganshire as WHETEN

1891        22 Comet Street, Roath, Cardiff, Glamorganshire as WHETTERS

                RG12/4388 Folio 118 page 56

Living in the same property was William DAVIES (69) widower Rough? Timberman born

                Monmouthshire described as stepfather.

Lodgers were William HUNT (61) Horse Driver born Gloucestershire and Mary HUNT (59)

                born Monmonthshire

1895        22 Comet Street, Roath, Glamorganshire

1901        33 Comet Street, Roath, Cardiff, Glamorganshire as WHETON

In the same premises was John LONGSTRETH (29) Coal Miner, his wife Jane (37) and

son Alfred (21), all born England!

There have been problems trying to sort out this family because of the different spellings used for the surname WHEATON and the fact that so many events are not included in the Civil Registration Indexes.

*  1875 March quarter, Cardiff District, Glamorganshire, marriage of James Thomas WHETEN and Sarah Jane PRICE.  In formation from ancestry.com and FreeBMD

*  1877 21st November  -Thomas WHEATON and Jane PRICE had a son James Thomas at 26 Comet Street, Roath.  Birth entry in the Civil Registration Index and certificate obtained.  No other entries for Thomas, Jane or James.

*  1881 Thomas WHETEN (30) born Holding, Channel Islands, his wife Jane (24) born Chepstow, and children Mary T (5), Thomas (3) and Martha WHETEN were at 26 Comet Street, Roath.

You will note that there is no James Thomas, born 1877 - or could it be that they called their son Thomas and not James?  There is no James WHETEN/WHEATON/WHETON etc on the 1881 census. Nor are there any other WHETEN/WHEATON families in Roath.  Nor are there any civil registration entries for future events for any of this family, except for a marriage for Thomas in 1906

*  1891 census  The family at 22 Comet Street are names WHETTERS, shown as this on the actual census return.  However, the names, ages, occupations all match those of this family except the wife, now shown as Maggie.

*  1895 28th December - James Thomas WHEATON and Mary Jane PRICE had a son William George at 22 Comet Street, Roath.  Birth entry in the Civil Registration Index and certificate obtained.  Marriage details and subsequent family information available.  Despite the change of parents' names it would seem that this could be the same couple.  Therefore, until proved otherwise it has been assumed that this is the case.  (The informant of the birth was M J BROWN.  There was a Mary BROWN in Roath in 1901 who could have been the oldest daughter in the family)

*  1901 James T WHETON (50) born Guernsey, Channel Islands, his wife Jane (46) born Chepstow, and children Ernest (?), Madeleine (14), Eliza (12), Richard (9), William (5) and Walter(2) WHETON all born Cardiff were living at 33 Comet Street, Roath.  There are only birth registrations for Madeleine, Richard and William, a death registration for Richard, and marriage entries for William and Walter with subsquent family details.  There are no other WHEATON/WHETON or variants of the name in Roath in 1901.

Given that the ages of James T and Jane correspond with the Thomas and Jane on the 1881 census, that the T appears to stand for Thomas, that both Janes were born in Chepstow, and both families lived in the same street when there are no other people with a similar name in Roath at either date, it has been assumed that they are the same family.
