In the Independent Chapel in Ottery St Mary there is a burial for "A child of Mr Wheaton on 19 December 1787"  Who was the child?  And which Mr Wheaton?  Michael BROWNING thinks it probably relates to "Peter as he was the only WHEATON frequenting the place at that time with children"

Will of Peter WHEATON

- to son Peter WHEATON the property called Whites (16 acres), and his part of property called Colesworthy or Whites & Moores (33 acres) on the north or right side of road leading from Feniton to  Talewater Bridge. Also the meadow (6½ acres) on the left side of lane called Bridge and  three closes called Downs (13 acres) at the head of Sherrard Moore and a close (8 acres) called the Harthings  near Sherrards Cross.  However, Peter had to pay the following legacies from the property:

- to son Thomas an annuity of £15 for life

- to the children of Thomas £200 after the death of Thomas.  But these excludes the children Thomas and Elizabeth

- to son William £250

- to Trustees for daughter Jane and her children £250 to be invested and to be given to Jane and/or her children if they return to England within ten years.  In the meantime, the interest is to be paid by the Trustees to Thomas and Elizabeth, children of his son Thomas

- to daughter Jane BOWDEN her mother's rings.  If Jane or her children do not return within the ten years the rings are to go to his daughter Mary

- to cousin Joseph WHEATON and William Anstice of Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, Gentlemen, £250 twelve calendar months after his daughter Jane BOWDEN returns to England within ten years

- to son Henry the property called Colesworthy, Whites or Moores on the south side of the road from Feniton to Talewater Bridge except for the meadow already given to Peter.  However, Henry had to pay the following legacies:

- to his daughter Mary £700

- to his Grandson Thomas, son of Thomas £100

- to his Granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas £100

However, if Henry is not 21 years old cousin Joseph WHEATON and William ANSTICE are appointed guardians of Henry and his property.

Notes for Sarah WHEATON:

Mrs GIBBONS of Colesworthy House in Devon suggests that Sarah was married to Unknown BABB.  We have been unable to find this marriage either in registers, in the Devon Marriage Index, or on the IGI.  Michael BROWNING states that she is not named in her father's Will.  Sarah is therefore shown as having died in 1787.

 

A Sarah BABB is mentioned in Land Documents and was probably living in Barrington Street, Tiverton, Devon in 1851 as a widow, born in Honiton age 63.  It could be that alterations will have to when further information is to hand.
