From the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society's Journal "The Greenwood Tree"

August 2004. An article from Sir Mervyn MEDLYCOTT, the Manor House, Sandford Orcas, Sherborne, Dorset.

"Charmouth Inhabitants

Amongst Charmouth parish council deposits in Dorset Record office (in PC/CMO 19/1/2/3) is an undated inhabitants list on two full sheets of paper, giving the names and some occupations of 81 householders with the numbers of males and females in each household.  This is very much like those compiled unofficially for the 1801 to 1831 censuses, but not mentioned in my FFHS Gibson Guide to Local Census Listings (1992-2001 editions)"

Thereafter are listed the names of the head of house, with occupation from two pages. Included on page 1:

Philip WHEATON, Carpenter 1 male and 5 females.

There then follows a discussion to determine the actual date for the information.

The total number of individuals comes to 405 which is too many for the 1801 (369) and too few for the 1811 (451) and 1821 (607).

It is thought that the list is of the 1811 census with the omission of 46 people.  To support this ida other statistics recorded in 1811 show that there were "72 inhabited houses, 2 uninhabited ones and 90 households.  But the above list only gives 78 households with 2 uninhabited house, one stated to be "vacant" and the other, most interestingly as "house building". My conclusion is that there was a third sheet, now lost, giving 12 more households and 46 more people."

In 1811 Philip, a carpenter, was married with two daughters, so 3 female inhabitants.  Who were the other two?  His father was dead, but we have no death date for his mother, Sarah, and no marriages for two of his sisters, Elizabeth and Sarah.  Were two of these the other occupations of Philip's house, or perhaps he had two servants?

Note from Michael BROWNING

"Born at Larkbeare.  Apprenticed to Mr SPURWAY in Honiton.  Financed by his mother, set up a bookshop in Ringwood, Hants.  Left shop in Ringwood in 1830 in charge of son William and bought a bookshop in Exeter from Mr PENNY.  Also opened a shop in Exmouth for daughters Mary and Ann.  When William retired Mary and Ann carried on business in Exeter and were joined by  nephew Alfred, age 14.

Letter from William Anstice WHEATON dated 1 June 1895

My paternal grandmother came to Ringwood on horseback all the way from Devonshire with 500 guineas in hard cash to pay for stock of books and stationery and for buying a printing plant to set my father up in business in Ringwood.  She stopped at the White Hart Hotel just opposite the house where the business was to be carried on, and there afterwards I was born.  It so happened that during that night the Ringwood Mills had taken fire which was plainly seen from the hotel.  My grandmother being frightened having that money with her, partially dressed and took cold from which she never really recovered.

Information from Jill COLLIER 18/1/2006 from the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Journal "Ringwood Yesterday"

"Fifty years ago many Ringwood and Fordingbridge folk would have been waiting for the opportunity to purchase the latest Ringwood Directory.  It was the fifty-fifth edition and, as it happened, the last in the series.  They were printed in the High Street behind BROWN and Son's shop next to PATTERSONS the butchers.  Charles BROWN and his son Norman ran the business after it had been sold by the WHEATON family in the late 1800s.  Charles had been an apprentice to Mr WHEATON in the 1860s, but left to start his own printing business on a small scale.  He made enough money to buy the WHEATON business which had been going in Ringwood since 1813."

"This Mr John WHEATON was avery genial hospitable man, a good and prosperous farmer.  The first time I recollect going to his house was when they resided at Clapperntale, a little more than a mile from Ottery...situate in Sir John KENNERWAY's park.  My Uncle John WHEATON afterwards removed to a grand house about half a mile nearer Ottery and called "Cadhay House" but still keeping the same farm.  The house occupied three sides of a square with stable and out-buildings, four side, having a grass plot in the centre.  One of the wings was made into a separate house which he let to another family of WHEATONs who also sent to ottery Chapel like good WHEATONs.  I went once to an exhibition at Southampton and noticed a piece of finery made of Honiton lace which had been worn by a lady on the occasion of her wedding in Queen Elizabeth's reign from "Cadhay House in Devonshire", that being the house at which I had just been staying with my uncle and aunt.  At one time this uncle John WHEATON had three young gentlemen in his house for him to instruct to agriculture"
