Generation No. 1

1.  Uriah1 WHEATON1 was born Abt. 17102, and died 1746 in Cape May County, New Jersey, USA3.  He married Elinor UNKNOWN wife of Uriah WHEATON3.  She was born 2 January 1714/154, and died 1747 in Cape May County, New Jersey, USA5.

Notes for URIAH WHEATON:

Family records holds that Uriah and Elinor Wheaton were parents of the children listed here, but there is no documentation.

The WHEATON family Bible also records that Uriah and Elinor were second cousins, suggesting that the family legend about her Swedish ancestry may be less then factual

The Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society has letters that indicate that Joseph Wheaton's father was named Uriah, and that Uriah may have had brothers, Peter, Silas and Robert. There are references to WHEATONs with those names in the neighbouring counties of Salem and Cumberland.

The four brothers were descendents possibly of Robert Wheaton of Rehoboth. Swansea, Massachusetts, but there is again no documentation.   There is some indication that one or more of Robert's grandchildren, namely Noah and Jonathan, may have settled in Trenton, New Jersey early in the 1700s with their mother.  If they are the connection, it is likely that their children moved into southern New Jersey by the 1740s.

One source believes Noah Wheaton, a grandson of Robert, could be the link. Robert reportedly came from Wales, as did his wife, Alice Bowen. Robert and Alice had several children, whose offspring spread throughout New England, New York and New Jersey.

FamilySearch.org's IGI has an entry for a Peter Wheaton, son of Uriah Wheaton (b 1750), Gloucester, New Jersey. This Peter could be our Uriah's brother.

The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, vols. 1-85, 1600s-1900s printed the Sealing Docket of Gloucester County, New Jersey, beginning 1746. In it, a Uriah Wheaton is mentioned three times (pages 16, 17 and 19)

Notes for Elinor UNKNOWN wife of Uriah WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Family legend has it that Elinor was a Delaware Swede, that is, a member of the Swedish colony in Delaware.  However, the WHEATON family bible records that she and Uriah were second cousins.

Children of Uriah WHEATON and Elinor WHEATON are:

                 i.    Ephraim2 WHEATON5, b. Abt. 17356; d. Unknown.

                 ii.    Daniel WHEATON7, b. Abt. 17378; d. Unknown.

2.             iii.    Silas WHEATON, b. Abt. 1739, Gloucester County, New Jersey, USA; d. Unknown, New Jersey, USA.

3.            iv.    Uriah WHEATON, b. Abt. 1741, Gloucester, New Jersey, USA; d. Unknown.

4.             v.    Joseph WHEATON, b. 20 February 1744/45, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA; d. Bef. 17 August 1803, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA.

Generation No. 2

2.  Silas2 WHEATON (Uriah1)9 was born Abt. 1739 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, USA10, and died Unknown in New Jersey, USA10.  He married Susannah HUNT10 Abt. 1800 in Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA10.  She was born 5 May 1779 in Chews Landing, Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA10, and died 29 July 1834 in New Jersey, USA10.

Child of Silas WHEATON and Susannah HUNT is:

3.  Uriah2 WHEATON (Uriah1)11 was born Abt. 1741 in Gloucester, New Jersey, USA12, and died Unknown12.  He married Margaret WHEATON12 1777 in New Jersey, USA.  She was born Abt. 175713, and died Unknown.

Uriah Wheaton is listed several times on the tax lists of colonial New Jersey, Upper Township, Cape May County, for the years 1781, 1783, 1784, 1785, 1786, 1789 and 1790. There is also a listing in 1782 in Greater Egg Harbour Township, Gloucester County, which could be another Uriah Wheaton

There is some confusion about Uriah WHEATON's birthdate and relationship to Uriah and Elinor.  In the LDS IGI his father s given as Peter WHEATON and his birthdate as 1750 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Uriah and Elinor had both died before 1750 according to the WHEATON family Bible.  Yet, the same Bible gives the 1750 Uriah both Peter and Uriah and Elinor as parents.

If the senior Uriah had a brother, Peter, one possible explanation is Uriah Sr's family took in Uriah Jr after Peter's death.

In the WHEATON family Bible, Uriah and wife Margaret are listed as first cousins.

Despite attempts to sort out this problem it appears we are no nearer reaching a solution.  Therefore at present there are two practially Uriah born 1741 families on the web site, one as son of Peter and with wife Margaret MACKAY and this one, son of Uriah with wife Margaret WHEATON

It is not known for sure who Uriah's first wife and the mother of all his children was. According to information from a Wheaton family Bible, he married his first cousin. He married again in Ohio (1809) to Margaret Mackay but all his children were born by this time. The most information we have on Uriah is what is found in his will transcribed below:

In the name of God, Amen.

I, Uriah WHEATON of Pee Pee Township, Ross County and State of Ohio, Farmer, being very sick and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God, calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a Christian and decent burial at the discretion of my executor, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God as touching my worldly estate which it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and dispose of this same in the following manner and form: First I give and bequeath to my son Humphrey WHEATON three dollars after my lawful debts are paid off, deducting such requisitions as are here after mentioned, whom I constitute, make and ordain my sole executor of this my last will and testament, to my dearly beloved wife Margaret such as the law directs, to my daughter Rebecca PENISTON three dollars, to my son James three dollars, to my son Lewis three dollars, to my daughter Pricilla KEEN three dollars, to my daughter Abigail PARK three dollars, to my two youngest daughters Christiana and Mary the remainder of my estate to be equally divided between them.

Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and delivered by the said Uriah Wheaton as his last will and testament who in his presence and the presence of each of them have hereunto subscribed our names. Done the 24th of August 1811.

Notes for Abigail WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON's web site states that "Abigail may have remarried In 1849 to John Lewis WILT".

The name rang a bell, and I find that I have a John Lewis WILT married to Abigail Park WHEATON born 1818. daughter of Lewis WHEATON and Sallie PARK....However, this information was sent to me by Duane and Nancy WHEATON 19/3/2003 from Jarel WHEATON.  Although much of the information is the same, there are difference and the family descends from Peter WHEATON, nor Uriah, and the grandmother of Abigail Park WHEATON is Margaret MACKEY whereas in the family in this file Margaret WHEATON is the mother of Abigail.

Notes for Prudence "Precilla" WHEATON:

Notes from John J Wheaton Familytreemaker.genealogy.com

Huffman KEEN in the IGI records is listed as marrying in 1820 Jane MATTHEWS or Jane BAILS.  If it is the same Huffman KEEN (and not his son), then Precilla must have died before 1820.

Notes for Huffman KEEN:

Notes from John J Wheaton Familytreemaker.genealogy.com

Another Huffman KEEN is listed in the 1860 census of Shelby, Tippecanoe, Indiana p 618.  He was 30 years old at the time, born Ohio, with a wife and children.  Is he erhaps a son of this Huffman KEEN?

An Ancestry.com Gene Pool record lists Joseph Wheaton, born 20 Feb. 1744, Cape May, New Jersey. His father is listed as Uriah Wheaton. This is the only record so far, outside of family records, that links Joseph with Uriah.

A family tree drawn by John William Wheaton has the birthyears of Joseph and Esther's children as follows:

Ephraim   1769

Martha     1771

Willets      1774

Enoch      1776

Joseph    1780

John        1782

Esther      1746 (sic)

Amos       1789

John        1795

The fact there are two Johns listed indicates the first John may have died in childhood. It also seems likely that John William Wheaton reversed the years for the first John and for Joseph. Other sources put Joseph's birthdate firmly in 1782.

Notes for SARAH WHEATON:

Sarah did not marry and had no children. We have a picture of her from James W. Wheaton, her nephew, as well as her house/shop.

She and her mother, Margaret, operated a millinery shop in Steelmanville for many years. A picture of this shop was included in a history of Egg Harbor Township, printed in 1964 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the township's founding.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Sarah is listed as head of household. Both she and her parents were born in New Jersey. She owned the home, which was mortgaged. Her boarders were Cattie Lewis, age 66, a seamstress, and Annie Lewis, 75, also a seamstress. A servant, Martha Robinson, aged 53, also lived there. In James' photos of the house, both Cattie and Annie are mentioned.

A copy of the application for administration of Sarah's will, dated 6 July 1916, is signed by Mary Y. Wheaton, administratix. The previously named administrator was Henry Lake, who predeceased Mary Y. Wheaton. Sarah died in possession of $3,000 in real property. The next of kin and heirs are listed as follows:

Lewis Wheaton               Nephew          Flemington, NJ

Anna Howland                Niece               Warren, RI

Sarah Krum             Niece               151 Calyer St., Brooklyn, NY

Carrie Crocker         Niece               35 W. 113th St., New York, NY

William Wheaton              Nephew          133 R.R. Ave., Cypress Hill Sta.,                                            Brooklyn, NY

Margaret Wheaton          Niece               100 St. Nicholas Ave., New York, NY

Mary Wheaton         Niece               ditto

Mrs. Laura Ackley           Niece               unknown

John Wheaton         Nephew          St. Paul's Hotel, New York, NY

James Wheaton              Nephew          unknown

Lewis Wheaton               Nephew          unknown

Edward Wheaton            Nephew          Wildwood, NJ

Harry Wheaton                Nephew          Wildwood, NJ

Anna Howland is probably Annie May Wheaton, as we have photos of "Annie" and her husband taken in Warren, RI.

Laura Ackley is probably Laura Wheaton, daughter of John and Mary Wheaton. Carrie Crocker, Sarah Krum, William Wheaton, Lewis Wheaton, Margaret Wheaton and Mary Wheaton were all children of Enoch Wheaton.

Letter to Sarah from her brother, John:

Letter  to Miss Sarah Wheaton,

care of Mr. J. Gilbert, No 159 North 12th St., Philadelphia

posted from Mays Landing, Nov. 8th, by John Wheaton

November 5, 1841

Dr  Sister

I received your letter of Oct. 27 yesterday and was much pleased to hear that you was well and liked your place & co. Your letter went to Edmond Somers and Lewis brought it yesterday. When you write again you had better direct to Mays Landing, P.O. care of Thompson.

I have been at home once since you went up. All well at that time. The day you left home George had another attack of epilipsy  and was sick all day.  I have not heard of his having any more since. I am more uneasy about him this fall than ever. He seems to have lost his spirits very much of late. I pity him from the bottom of my heart but cannot do him any good.  I am afraid the disease will get so firmly seated that it will be impossible to move it.

I have nothing new to tell you about except that Hannah lost Washington Adams. He was married about two weeks ago and I was present at the wedding and had a very social time. The girl's name was Robart but I suppose you did not know her.

    I have been suffering from a severe cold but felt rather better today. The wether which has been very warm for the season altered very sudden yesterday. We had quite a heavy gust. The wind has got moved to the westward and there is every indication of settled wether. I am pleased to hear that you have concluded not to stay so long as we are all anxious to see you. I hope you will be careful about the society you keep and never associate with anyone whose character is the least suspicious. I suppose you think {I} am cautioning you unnessarily but I know that you are likely to meet with a great many strange characters and it is better to be always aware of strangers but I think you are possessed of quite as much discretion as most young persons of your age and experience. {NOTE: Sarah would have been 17 or 18 at this writing.}

The place where you live must be in the midst of the bustle and confusion which is not as agreeable as it would be in a more retired part of the city but I expect you can make yourself tolerably well contented any where while all is a novelty.

I saw the letter you wrote home the other day. You do not mention Uncle Amos family in neither one. I suppose you have forgotten to mention them. You must try to keep in friendship with all our friends if possible. If they do not treat you quite well as they might you must not show any resentment. Remember me to Isaac and Adelaide (?) and uncle's family and all who may enquire after me. Write whenever you can. Let me know in your next what you have seen new since you have been in town. I should like to be there with you a few days if circumstances would permit but I shall not be able during your stay this time. Probably I may next spring.

                                 I am your affectionate

                                                 brother,

                                         John Wheaton

Judging from this information, Esther must have been single or widowed when she married Rem Golden in Nov. 1810. We have no evidence that Esther married before, however.

8.  Amos3 WHEATON (Joseph2, Uriah1)26 was born 1789 in New Jersey, USA26, and died Bef. 1880 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA26.  He married Rachel UNKNOWN wife of Amos WHEATON26.  She was born Abt. 1790 in Pennsylvania, USA26, and died Aft. 1880 in Cape May County, New Jersey, USA26.

Notes for Amos WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for AMOS WHEATON:

John Wheaton (1818-1897) mentions "Uncle Amos" Wheaton and family in an 1841 letter to his sister Sarah Wheaton. At the time, she was 16 or 17 and living in Philadelphia with the Gilbert family, for unknown reasons. Family records report Amos' birth in 1789, but there is no census evidence of that particular Amos in New Jersey. The letter implies that Amos had moved to Philadelphia, and perhaps was not on the best terms with the rest of the "country cousins" in southern New Jersey.

A search of census records provides the three citations given here, for 1830, 1850 and 1860. No 1840 listing has been found yet, as of 10/2002.  The ages of Amos, Rachel and Anna vary from census to census, but the approximate birth year for Amos agrees reasonably with the family records.

In addition, the Chapmans, with whom the Wheatons were living in 1850 amd 1860, provide additional evidence that this Amos is the right one. John Wheaton (the letter writer) had a daughter by his second wife, named Esther Chapman Wheaton. Since the Chapman name does seem to appear in the mother's line, there is reason to believe that this younger Esther (who died in childhood) was named after the Philadelphia Esther. Perhaps John got along better with his Uncle Amos than his sister Sarah did, and wanted to honor the relation.

This naming also implies that Rachel was perhaps a Chapman, and that William was her nephew or perhaps a son by a previous marriage. Esther could be his sister, or his wife. The early censuses are not clear on these matters.

William R. Chapman was listed as a coal merchant in the 1860 Philadelphia census. In the 1890 city directory, his address is listed as 1215 S. Broad Street, and he is listed as a partner in Fox & Chapman coal merchants, 900 Sutherland Av. Michael M. Fox is the other partner.

Amos apparently died before 1880, as his wife Rachel and daughter Anna S. are living with his nephew Amos Wheaton in Cape May County, N.J., at the time of the census.

Notes for Enoch WHEATON:

Notes for ENOCH WHEATON:

The 1830 census of Gloucester County, Weymouth Township, p. 180, lists the following:

Enoch Wheaton       1 male under 5 years

                1 male between 20 and 30 years

                2 females under 5 years

                2 female between 30 and 30 years

Another Enoch is listed in Cape May County, Upper Township, p. 260, with this information:

Enoch Wheaton       1 male 5-10 years

                1 male 15-20 years

                1 male 20-30 years

                2 females under 5

                1 female 5-10 years

                1 female 20-30 years

Of the two, the second seems to fit this family better.

The 1840 census of Cape May County, Upper Township (p. 36), has this listing:

Enoch Wheaton       1 male 15-20

                1 male 30-40

                1 female 0-5

                1 female 5-10

                2 females 10-15

                1 female 15-20

                1 female 30-40

The Weymouth County Enoch is not listed in the 1850 census for that township, but a widow, Phebe Wheaton, is. There is no record available (on-line) tying Phebe to Enoch of Weymouth. There are several records for her son, Philip, b 1830 in Atlantic County, in Cape May censuses, however. Possibly the Weymouth Enoch is the son of Joseph and Esther Willets.

1840 census information for Atlantic County, Weymouth Township, p. 3:

Enoch Wheaton       2 males under 5

                1 male 10-15

                1 male 30-40

                1 female under 5

                2 females 10-15

                1 female 30-40

The 1850 and 1860 federal censuses of Cape May County list this Enoch and his family.

Enoch and Sarah are buried near Silas Wheaton (d. 19 July 1871, aged 37), and Priscilla Wheaton (d. 12 May 1862, aged 24.9.8) in the Tuckahoe M.E. Church yard.

Notes for Amos WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for AMOS WHEATON:

At the time of the 1880 census, Amos' household included his wife, Harriet, 61, son Walter, 17, son Howard, also 17, a niece, Anna S. Wheaton, 56, and an aunt, Rachel Wheaton, age 96. The marital status of Anna and Rachel were not specified in the census enumeration. Anna was born in Philadelphia, her father was born in New Jersey and her mother in Pennsylvania. Rachel was born in Pennsylvania; her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in New Jersey.

In the 1860 census of Philadelphia, another Amos Wheaton, aged 72, was living with his wife, Rachel, aged 71, and his daughter, Anna S. Wheaton, aged 36. Both women were listed as being born in Pennsylvania. This Wheaton family was living with William R. Chapman and Esther Chapman, who may have been related to Rachel. William was a coal merchant. Rachel's age in 1850 was given as 59 and Anna's as 18.

Given this information, the Philadelphia Amos must have died between 1860 and 1880, and his widow and daughter came to live in New Jersey with this Amos Wheaton. Rachel would have been his aunt, and Anna his first cousin.

Notes for John WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for JOHN WHEATON:

John Wheaton must have left the family farm between the 1840 and 1850 U.S. Census dates. He is not listed in New York City directories for the years 1827-43 (1) or 1847-49 (2). He is listed in the 1850 census of New York, p. 225.

(1) Longworth's American Almanac, New York Register and City Directory.

(2) Doggett's New York City Directory.

Census, 1850, 22 August: John Wheaton, fifth ward, County of New York (aka Borough of Manhattan), age 31, occupation: butter merchant. Several unrelated persons are listed for the same location, indicating he lived in an apartment house.

Census, 1860, 21 July: Fifth ward of New York County: John Wheaton, age 41, is living with Chauncey and Anna Watson, and son James, probably at 47 Beach Street. (Beach Street was in the fifth ward during the 1850 and 1860 censuses.)

Census, 1870, 21 August: 20th ward of Kings County: John Wheaton, age 51, is living with Mary (age 32), Will (age 6), Annie (age 4), Laura (age 1) and Bridget Ryan, servant, age 22, b. in Ireland.

In the 1900 census, the listing for John W. Wheaton, son of John and Mary Blackington Wheaton, states that John W. and Mary were both born in Massachusetts. We can presume then that the elder John left New York City sometime after Laura's death and settled in Massachusetts. This would also explain why James W. Wheaton, the son of Laura, was left in the care of his grandmother in New York City.

The New York City directory for 1869 lists John Wheaton & Co., provisions, 261 Washington St., h. Brooklyn. If this John is the right one, he must have moved to Brooklyn in 1869, perhaps shortly after Chauncey Watson's death.

Notes for Laura W ATWOOD:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for LAURA W. ATWOOD:

Laura W. Atwood was born in Ohio, but so far that is all we know about her. We presume that the witnesses to her marriage to John Wheaton, Chauncey and Ann Watson, are her parents. Ann is referred to as James W. Wheaton's grandmother in his school records.

A family Bible belonging to Ann contains many names of Watson and Brundige family members. No kinships are specified, nor are locations. Therefore, all of Laura's ancestors are unconfirmed.

We also do not know why her surname is Atwood. She may have been married before, which could be unlikely considering she was 23 when she married John Wheaton. It is also possible that Ann Watson married an Atwood, then remarried.

Laura is not listed with Chauncey, Anna, John and James in the 1860 census. Presumably she died between Sept. 1857 and July 1860.

Laura is not included in 1840 census listing for Chauncey Watson, at which time she would have been 7 years old. Perhaps she stayed in Ohio, or perhaps she is an adopted child, perhaps a niece.

Living near Chauncey's brother, Philo,  in 1850 were several Atwoods, in nearby Owen Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. This offers a clue as to the origins of Laura W. Atwood. Perhaps she was a relative by marriage of Philo, who kept in close touch with his brother, Chauncey, in New York City. We have a reference in Anna Watson's 1863 diary to a visit by Philo and Minerva to the City. Laura's birthplace of Ohio parallels the movements of Philo and family between 1835 and 1843. Perhaps Laura's family also moved from Ohio to Illinois as these families worked their ways across the Northwest Territories.

Notes for Mary A BLACKINGTON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for MARY A. BLACKINGTON:

The parentage of Mary A. Blackinton (Blackington) is not confirmed as yet, but the evidence seems to indicate that she is the daughter of Leonard and Caroline Blackinton of Attleborough Township, Bristol County, Massachusetts. She is also the sister of Charles E. Blackinton.

From family records we know that Mary was married 30 October 1860 to John Wheaton. Her maiden name in family records is given as Blackington, but apparently it was misspelled.

In the 1870 census, she is listed at age 32 with John Wheaton and their children, John William (Will), Laura A. and Annie M, in Brooklyn, New York. Her birthplace is listed as Massachusetts in this census record as well as the 1900 census records for John William and Annie M. (Wheaton) Howland.

In the 1910 census, she is listed at age 73, a widow, with Henry P. and Annie M. Howland in Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island. Charles, who was living with Henry and Annie at the time of the 1900 census, is also living with them at age 80 in 1910. The two Bristol Counties lie on other side of the Mass.-R.I. state line.

Working a hunch that Mary and Charles were siblings and must have come from a part of Massachusetts close to Warren, I did a search for Blackintons and Blackintons in the 1850 census on ancestry.com. Leonard and Caroline Blackinton came up in Bristol County, Mass., with Mary and Charles listed with the appropriate ages. (Charles however is listed as being born in Pennsylvania.)

Mary, Charles and Caroline are listed together in North Attleborough, Mass., in June 1860.

These dates would require that Mary left North Attleborough after June 1860 to marry John Wheaton in October the same year. How they would met in such a situation is unclear. However, her Attleborough origins would explain how Annie May ended up in Warren, Rhode Island, and why family photos place John Wheaton in Warren and Providence before his death in 1897.

Ancestry World Tree entries for both Charles and Mary confirm they (or people with the same names and birthdates) were children of Caroline and Leonard Blackinton.

Mary and Charles are not listed in the 1920 census with Henry and Annie Howland, indicated the two died sometime between the takings of the two censuses.

Notes for JOSEPH LEONARD WHEATON:

Joseph Leonard Wheaton is referred to frequently in Anna Watson's 1863 diary as "Leny." He apparently was a sickly child, as someone had to care for him in house. The job seemed to fall on Anna's shoulders quite often.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAM WHEATON:

John W. Wheaton was the proprietor of Saint Paul's Hotel at 60th Street and Columbus Avenue, Manhattan, according to a post card in our possession. A 1910 street atlas of New York City placed the hotel on the southeast corner. The New York Coliseum was later erected on the site.

John spent some time in France, and adopted the name Jean as a nickname. He and his wife Blanche had a cabin in the Catskill Mountains called Wheaton Shandaken Ranch.

The 1900 census has Blanche and John as the proprietor of the Hotel Porcupine, on the corner of Edgewood and Marie Streets, Eden Town, Hancock County, Maine. The census indicated his mother, Mary, was born in Massachusetts, as was John himself. This means that John Wheaton the senior must have left New York City sometime after the death of Laura, his first wife. This move would also explain why James W. Wheaton was left in the care of his grandmother in New York City while still of school age.

However, the 1870 census of 20th ward Kings County, New York, has Will Wheaton, age 6, as a New York native. Perhaps he was mistaken in the 1900 census.

Notes for BLANCHE H. STORER:

The 1900 federal census states that Blanche's father was born in Massachusetts and her mother in Ohio. (line 19)

The 1880 census has a Blanche Storer, b. 1872 in Maine, the daughter of John D. Storer, 45, a lawyer, and Cornelia Storer, 32. Both parents were born in Maine, as were their parents. They were living in Auburn Township, Androscoggin County, Maine. John D. Storer was a lawyer, corroborating a listing for a John D. Storer in the 1884 city directory.

This information contradicts the 1900 census, so there is no firm evidence that John D. and Cornelia are in fact our Blanche's parents.

Notes for Lewis WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for LEWIS WHEATON:

From 1874 notebook of James W. Wheaton: Lewis Wheaton's address, P.O. Box 118, Pella, Iowa.

The 1850 federal census lists a Lewis Wheaton, aged 29, in Haddonfield Twp., Camden County, New Jersey {roll M432_445, p. 149, image 299). His occupation was coach dealer and he was born in New Jersey. His household included: Ann F. Wheaton, 23, born in Philadelphia, and Joseph C. Wheaton, aged 9 months, born in New Jersey. Also in the house were Emma J. Chandler, 8, Mariah Blackman, 11, John Hatcher, 21, a wheelwright, James Greely (sp?), 19, and James Day, 18, apprentices. All but James were born in New Jersey.

An Ancestry World Tree entry for Lewis Wheaton lists his birth year as 1821 in New Jersey and his wife as Anna Frances. Their child was Henry C. Wheaton.

The 1860 federal census lists a Lewis Wheaton, aged 39, in Upper Twp., Cape May County, New Jersey.  (18 June 1860) His occupation is listed as farmer, with real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property valued at $1,500.  He was born in New Jersey. Listed in his household were: Anna, 36, Joseph C. (or G.), 10, George W., 7, Edward C. (or G.), 5, and Henry C. (or G.), 3. All were born in New Jersey, and the three older children had attended school.

The 1870 federal census has Lewis Wheaton, age 49, an innkeeper, in Cape May County, Middle Township, with $8,000 in real property and $4,000 in personal property. Also listed are Hannah, age 43, Joseph, 20, George, 17, Edward, 15, Harry, 12 and Daniel, 6.

The 1880 federal census has Lewis Wheaton, age 58, farmer and innkeeper, in Middle Township, with wife Anna F., 54, Joseph C., 34, clerk in store, Daniel W., 16, in school, and Lewis K., 8, in school. Anna was born in Pennsylvania; her father was born in Delaware and her mother in New Jersey. The boys and Lewis were all born in New Jersey. George, Edward and Henry are listed separately in the 1880 census. (10 June 1880)

The will of Sarah Wheaton, Lewis' sister, lists Edward Wheaton and Harry Wheaton among her survivors, who in 1916 were living in Wildwood, New Jersey. The Edward and Henry from 1860-70 may be the same persons. Two Lewis Wheatons are also listed: one with address unknown and another in Flemington, NJ.

The 1900 Federal Census lists a Lewis Wheaton, residing in Middle Twp., Cape May County, New Jersey, born Dec 1819 in New Jersey. Both of his parents were also born in New Jersey. He operated a livery and sale stable. At the time, he lived with a housekeeper, Mary J. Almond, and a servant, Wilbert Kates.

IGI listings indicate that Lewis and family lived in Camden County, NJ, at least until the birth of George on 26 January 1853. They moved to Cape May County by June 1860.

In an 1841 letter to his sister Sarah, John Wheaton (1818-1897) mentions that Lewis had brought one of Sarah's letters home from Edmond Somers' place. Perhaps he had left Cape May County for Camden County sometime afterward.

Unknown.

Notes for George W WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for GEORGE W. WHEATON:

George is listed in the 1880 census of Middle Township, Cape May County, New Jersey with wife Julia S. Wheaton. They must have married between the taking of the 1870 census and 10 June 1880, the date of the 1880 census.

However, the 1900 census of Philadelphia lists a George W. Wheaton, b. Jan 1853 in New Jersey, a salesman, with wife Ella. They had been married 4 years. Ella was born Sept. 1860 in Pennsylvania; her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in New Jersey. The couple was boarding with Eva Johnson at the time.

In 1910, George and Ella were farming in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, according to the 1910 federal census. George W. and Ella M. Wheaton were still farming in 1920, in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, Penn., according to the 1920 census.

It seems reasonable to assume that the 1880 George and the 1900-1920 George is the same person. If George and Ella were married in 1886, Julia must have died between 1880 and 1886, perhaps in Cape May. Another possibility is that George and Julia were divorced, although Julia is not found in the 1900 census (as a head of household at least). George must have left for Philadelphia from Cape May to find his fortunes in the big city, perhaps with the aim of saving enough money to buy his own farm.

We do not know if George and Julia had children. It appears he and Ella did not.

Notes for Enoch WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Enoch must have left the family farm after 1850 for New York City, following brother John's footsteps. We still need to track down Huldah's last name and their marriage date. The older woman listed in the 1900 census record may be a relative. The name is hard to read in the census taker's handwriting, but it looks like Mary Young, born in NJ. Another grandchild is also listed, Mary Kains or Rains or Kauns. Again, the handwriting is unclear. Since Mary and Margaret remained single, the grandchild Mary would indicate Enoch and Huldah had another daughter, who perhaps died.

His address in 1900 was 107 128th Street, according to the 1900 census. He was renting at the time. Living with the family was a Finnish-born servant woman and two female boarders.

The 1880 census also lists Mary R. Young, a widow, aged 67, living with Enoch and Huldah. Her relation is still obscure, as the copy of the microfilm is hard to read. She could be Huldah's sister or her mother. Mary was b in New Jersey, as were her parents.

Notes for Huldah AYERS:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for HULDAH AYERS:

Huldah's last name is not known. However, a global search of the 1850 census of New Jersey on the name of Huldah turned up one woman in Egg Harbor Township in Atlantic County, where Enoch lived at the time with his parents. Huldah A. Ayers, age 15, was living in the household of Ezekias Steelman, age 46, a farmer. Also living there were May Doughty, 13, Baker Doughty, 26, farmer, Jane Jackaway (sp?), 18, and John Homan, 10. Baker owned real estate worth $500. (1850 census, p. 18, 25 July 1850) Thus, Huldah Ayers seems a likely candidate to be Enoch's wife. We know he married Huldah before the 1860 census and had a son by 1857, so it seems reasonable to assume the two married in Egg Harbor, then moved to New York City by 1860.

Huldah was a common name in those days, so a check of county records is in order.

The 1880 census, however, lists a widow, Mary R. Young, living with Huldah and Enoch. Mary could be Huldah's sister or mother -- the census image is difficult to read.

Notes for THEODORE CORSON WHEATON:

From the narrative of Marty Weber, we have the following information about Theodore Corson Wheaton. As a young man, he was a (seasick) seaman and railroad laborer, and had managed to save $1,000 by the time he was 21. He attended first pharmaceutical school, then medical school in Philadelphia. He first practiced medicine in South Seaville, New Jersey, then in Millville. He and his wife operated a general store and pharmacy in addition to his medical practice in Millville.

Around 1888, Theodore C. Wheaton became a partner in a glassmaking venture. By 1890 he was the sole proprietor and renamed the company T.C. Wheaton Co. in 1901. This company eventually became the Wheaton Glass Co., which specialized in the production of laboratory and pharmaceutical glassware. It remained in family hands until its purchase by a multinational company in the 1990s.

The company, however, still operates a historical village -- Wheaton Village -- in Millville.

About Wheaton Village

History of Wheaton Village

The important American glass industry began in southern New Jersey because of the availability of natural resources such as wood, sand, soda ash and silica. The nation’s earliest successful glass factory was founded in 1789 by Caspar Wistar in nearby Salem County in Millville. Many of the nation’s foremost glass factories operate in South Jersey.

In 1888, Dr. Theodore Corson Wheaton, a pharmacist, began making his own pharmaceutical bottles in a glass factory in Millville. From these beginnings today’s giant glass manufacturer, Wheaton USA, formerly Wheaton Industries, Inc., evolved.

Early in the 1960s Dr. Wheaton’s grandson, Frank H. Wheaton, Jr., visited the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. He discovered that much of the glass created and produced in southern New Jersey was displayed in this museum. He felt that these treasured museum pieces should be displayed in the areas in which they were produced...southern New Jersey.

Wheaton Village became his goal. He searched for and finally located a collection of American glass from the Bucks County Glass Museum in Pennsylvania. This became the foundation for what is now the finest collection of American glass at Wheaton Village.

The early collection was housed in the Wheaton family home on High Street in Millville. During this period, Mr. Wheaton assembled a group to build and design what he envisioned as a “typical cross-roads glass community at the turn of the 20th century that included a glass museum.”

In 1970, the first buildings at Wheaton Village opened to the public. The present administration building housed the museum collection. There was also a gatehouse, a General Store, a museum store called the “Brownstone Emporium,” and support facilities for carpentry and painting.

Soon construction began on the Museum of American Glass and the T. C. Wheaton Glass Factory. Until completion of the factory, glassblowing demonstrations were conducted in a glass furnace placed in a small structure adjacent to the entrance. The museum opened in 1973, followed shortly thereafter by the opening of the T. C. Wheaton Glass Factory, Dr. T. C. Wheaton Pharmacy, West Jersey Crafts, Arthur Gorham Paperweight Shop, Crafts and Trades Row and a barn. (The Pharmacy is now the “Down Jersey Folklife Center” and West Jersey Crafts has become “The Gallery of Fine Craft.”

To better utilize the facilities offered by the glass factory, a program to support emerging contemporary glass artists was created in 1983. Recognizing the needs of these artists to have access to hot glass, a group of artists including Paul Joseph Stankard and Tom Patti worked with Wheaton Village to establish the “Creative Glass Center of America.” Through CGCA, contemporary glass artists are provided with the facilities, equipment, time and housing to further develop their art.

Today, Wheaton Village consists of over 60 acres with 20 buildings. The Museum of American Glass houses over 6,500 objects, both historic and contemporary. The fully operational glass factory presents daily, interpretive demonstrations for the public with artists showing traditional and contemporary glassblowing techniques. In the Craft Studios artists demonstrate the traditional southern New Jersey crafts of pottery, wood and flameworking. The 1863 C. P. Huntington Train, 1876 Centre Grove Schoolhouse, Arthur Gorham Paperweight Shop, Christmas Shop, and the Education and Event Center now complete the Village attractions. The 100-room Country Inn by Carlson®, PaperWaiter Restaurant and Pub, and Heritage House Banquet Facility are located adjacent to the Village.

Wheaton Village has achieved recognition not only on a local and regional level, but, through its collections, programs, seminars, and exhibitions, on both a national and international level.

Notes for James Watson WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for JAMES WATSON WHEATON:

In the 1860 census, James, aged 3, is listed with his father John and grandparents Chauncey and Anna WATSON. His residence was in the 5th ward; 47 Beach St. was in the 5th ward during the 1850 and 1860 census years.

James Watson WHEATON attended the School of the Collegiate Reformed Dutch Church from 24 Sept.  1868 to 27 June 1871. He was graduated 8 June 1871 and gave the valedictory address.  In a history of the school, his parent was listed as Ann WATSON, grandmother, and his residence was given as 47 Beach Street, Manhattan. (History, p. 189)

The school occupied a building known as the DeWitt Chapel, at 160 West 29th Street in Manhattan, at the time of his years there. (p. 88) Founded as a church school, it was originally open to all students regardless of their church affiliation until the number of potential students forced the trustees to limit enrollment to church members or attenders. In 1869 the school reopened its doors to members of the public. (pp. 91-92) Therefore we can assume that Ann WATSON was a member of the Church, since James was admitted in 1868, at age 11.

History of the School of the Collegiate Reformed Dutch Church in the City of New York, from 1633 to 1883; Aldine Press, New York; 1883.

After Chauncey's death in 1869, Anna and James apparently moved to the 19th ward of Brooklyn by the time of the 1870 federal census.  James is listed with his grandmother's surname, but is the correct age, 12.

He married young, at age 17, to Emma L. KETCHAM, also aged 17, according to the 1900 Federal Census of Chicago, Illinois. Living with the couple were their son, James, Emma's widowed mother, Sarah (?) KETCHAM, and a girl listed as their daughter, Gladys Wheaton, age 5. Gladys, however, is listed as being born in Canada of Canadian-born parents. All of the other Wheatons living then at 2371 W. Ontario St were born in New York. So Gladys was perhaps adopted. Baby photos of Gladys are from a Montreal studio. James was apparently working for the Guardian Fire and Life Assurance Co. in Montreal near the time of her birth. James worked for 25 years for the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company, which had offices in New York, London and Chicago. He was given a 17-jewel Swiss movement pocket watch as a retirement gift.

He died in 1942 at the Nassau Hospital, Mineola, New York, because of an intestinal obstruction caused by a carcinoma of the colon. His address at the time was 138 Jerome Avenue, Mineola.

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for EMMA L. KETCHAM:

Emma was born in New York, perhaps in New York City, and married James Watson Wheaton when both were about 17. The 1930 census lists her age as 67, putting her birthyear as 1863, and her age of first marriage as 15, putting the marriage year as 1878. In any event, James Watson Wheaton Jr., was born in New York in 1876, perhaps while the couple was living at 78 Beekman St., Manhattan. The elder James by 1887 had found work in Montreal as an agent of the Guardian Fire and Life Assurance Co. By 1894 they had moved to Chicago and at some point adopted Florence Nichol and renamed her Gladys Wheaton. In 1900 the family of four were living on W. Ontario St. in Chicago.

Notes for ANNA LUCIA BERGSTROM:

Anna died while reading the newspaper in her living room of a heart attack. Her address at the time was 138 Jerome Avenue, Mineola, New York.

The 1920 Federal Census of New York, Queens County, gives the following information about Anna, living at 1335 Dakota Ave:

33 years of age, married, immigrated 1901, naturalized citizen, born in Sweden, mother language, Swedish. Father born in Sweden, mother language Swedish. Mother, ditto. No occupation listed.

Anna had a cousin, Gustav Falk, who was living in Duluth, Minn., 22 Sept. 1913, and a brother Carl, living in nearby Aurora Village, in the 1920s.

In the 1930 census, she is listed as being 43, putting her birth year as 1885, marrying at age 18, putting the marriage year as 1905. Since we have her living in Moose Jaw, Sask., Canada in 1904, Anna must have come to Chicago soon after and there met James Wheaton.

The 1930 census lists Annie with her son, John C. Howland. The record reports her age correctly, but lists her as being married at age 25, putting the marriage year as 1890. Her husband Henry is not listed, however. Perhaps she was widowed by 1930, or perhaps her husband was elsewhere when the census was taken.

Notes for CHARLES NATHAN WHEATON:

Charles was a partner in Howland & Wheaton/Samsy Manufacturing Co., manufacturers of handkerchiefs, 53 Leonard St., Manhattan, judging from an undated postcard left for James W. Wheaton.

Leonard Street is in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, on the lower west side. In 2001 53 Leonard Street, now renovated, was divided into residential lofts.

Annie May, Charles' sister, may have married his partner, Henry P. Howland.

The Providence, RI, city directory for 1890 lists a Charles M. Wheaton, a clerk at 64 So. Main St., who boarded in Warren, RI.

Judging from the census information, Charles was born in Manhattan or perhaps Brooklyn. His parents must have moved to Massachusetts or the Warren, R.I., area by 1890. At some point, he and Henry P. Howland must have entered into a partnership to manufacture handerkerchiefs. Perhaps they started in Warren or Providence, but moved the venture to New York by 1920. Doubtless, Charles became a commuter to work in Manhattan.

The 1880 Federal census of New Jersey puts Edward C. and Rebecca Douglass Wheaton living with her uncle Amos Douglass and aunt Elizabeth Douglass in Cape May Courthouse, Middle Township, Cape May County. Edward was a tinsmith. His uncle was an oysterman.

An Ancestry.com Ancestry World Tree entry for Edward C. Wheaton lists his marriage to Rebecca P. Douglass (b. 1858). They had five children: Fannie, Monroe, Keziah, Frank and Ruth. The reference cited is the Cape May Spray. The 1900 and 1910 censuses, however, state that only Fannie survived. The 1910 census states that Rebecca had three pregnancies, and one surviving child.

Coincidences!

In November 2010 I was contacted by someone connected to my own WHEATON family.  In one of her messages she told me that the family had moved to New Jersey, USA when her husband, an engineerm had a job working for one of the biggest privately owned glass/plastic bottle manufacturing industries in the US ("maybe the world") - WHEATON Industries, Millville, New Jersey.  She has since looked on my web set and found Frank H WHEATON, head of WHEATON Industries, who was known to my contact's husband!

26.  Gladys6 WHEATON (James Watson5, John4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Uriah1)59 was born 19 April 1895 in Mattawa, Nipissing District, Ontario, Canada59, and died 21 June 1921 in Linwood, New Jersey, USA59.  She married Horace BIRD59.  He was born 29 November 1889 in Linwood, New Jersey, USA59, and died 1947 in Linwood, New Jersey, USA59.

Notes for Gladys WHEATON:

Information from John WHEATON 9th November 2002

Notes for GLADYS WHEATON:

Gladys WHEATON, aged 5 at the time of the 1900 Federal Census, is listed as the daughter of James W. and Emma L. WHEATON, despite Gladys being born in (English) Canada of Canadian-born parents. Undoubtedly she was adopted by the WHEATONs.

However, the adoption was not formal. Gladys, whose birth name was Florence NICHOLS or NICHOL, could not use the name Gladys WHEATON when she married Horace BIRD. Rather, she was compelled to put her birth name on the marriage license. (Correspondence, Pat Bird, her grandchild, 9 July 2001)

We know nothing about the circumstances surrounding Gladys's adoption, or the details of how she and Emma ended up in Linwood, New Jersey, by 1907. However,  the 1900 census also lists as a lodger with the Wheatons a Thomas S. NICHOL, a doctor, who was born in (English) Canada in December 1867 of a Scots-born father and a Canadian mother. Could this man be Florence NICHOLS' natural father?

Gladys apparently kept in touch with her adopted father, as he had several photos of her through young adulthood.

She also stayed in touch with her adopted mother, as Pat BIRD, her granddaughter, has several birthday cards sent from Emma to Gladys.

The christening photo was made by Aubin & Cie, 3673 Notre-Dame, St. Henri, Montreal, which both Pat BIRD and I have.  We both have the Atlantic City postcard of Gladys taken when she was 12. Pat BIRD believes Florence NICHOLS was born in Ontario at the location listed here, but that her birth family may have moved to Quebec before Florence ended up in Chicago with the WHEATONs.

Familysearch.org also lists the Nipissing birthplace for Florence NICHOLS, but there is no guarantee that the Nipissing Florence is in fact Gladys.

Pat BIRD found evidence during a trip to Montréal that Thomas NICHOL may have indeed been Gladys' father, or perhaps that his unmarried sister, Gertrude Florence NICHOL, was Gladys mother. More About GLADYS WHEATON:

Adoption: Bef. 1900, Chicago, Illinois206

Information from Pat BIRD 12 September 2005

Florence NICHOL (renamed Gladys WHEATON by her adoptive parents) was my grandmother.  She was the illegitimate daughter of Thomas Scott NICHOL, a homeopathic physician in Montreal. She was born in 1895 in Montreal, but no one has been able to discover who her mother was.

Scott NICHOL was the son of Thomas NICHOL, M.D., also a homeopathic physician, who had a very well known practice in Montreal. Scott NICHOL's mother was Hannah Jane GRIEVE.

From all accounts, Scott NICHOL was the black sheep of the family. He fathered Florence in 1895, was reputed to be an alcoholic, and in 1901 married Arabella Vaux POTTER, who was 26 years older than he was! Being of an apparently well-to-do and prominent family in Montreal--at least in medical circles--it's possible that his family never knew of Florence NICHOL, as such births were usually kept under wraps. However, they may have known about it, as well as his other questionable behavior, because when I visited Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, I found every member of his family--parents, sisters, brothers, in-laws, and nieces and nephews buried in the same plot with a handsome marker listing all their names. The only one missing on the marker is himself, even though the cemetery records indicate that he, too, is buried in that plot. Seems as if the family decided he didn't deserve to be publicly acknowledged on the marker!

At any rate, he did do one good thing in his life, which was to give his illegitimate daughter to the WHEATONs to raise, and in the 1900 Chicago census referenced in your work, you may notice that a Thomas S. NICHOL, physician, born in Canada, is also listed as a "lodger." My guess is he was visiting his daughter to see how she was doing. The WHEATONs moved to southern New Jersey and it was there that Florence NICHOL/Gladys WHEATON met and married my grandfather and had my father.

Horace was a childhood pal of Gladys Wheaton. We know that the two had at least one outing with Gladys' adoptive father, James Wheaton, in 1909, and that the Birds and Emma and Gladys Wheaton were neighbors. Horace and Gladys likely attended school together.

Notes for HELEN MARIA ANDERSON:

The 1920 census of Richmond County, New York State (aka Staten Island lists this information for Helen:

age 5, attended school in last six months, born in New York, parents born in US (sic)

However, the census lists two other Anderson children with similar parentage information, so there is no definite evidence that this Helen is the right one.
