My cousin Barry, and his wife have worked on "our" side of the WHEATON/WHETEN tree for over 12 years, in their retirement. Now, what may be interesting to point out is the way my cousin Barry spells his name... let me explain. Barry's father and my father were "half" brothers... same father. His name was William Owen "WHETEN". Barry's father (Jack) was one of 9 children from William's first marriage. His first wife passed away and he then married his second wife. My father was one of 9 children from that marriage. BTW, all of my father's siblings are now deceased... and, that includes "4 more" children William had... these 4 he had with a woman he left my father's mother for!  To state it in simpler terms; my grandfather (William Owen WHETEN) had 2 wives that he married and 1 he did not. He had 9 plus 9 children with the first two wives, and 4 with a third women that he "ran off" with.

So, back to why my cousin Barry spells his name WHEATON and not WHETEN. He tells me that his father believed that it "should" be spelled that way; that "WHETEN" was incorrect. Barry presented me and my siblings with a 265 page document that states at the beginning that, "his father was wrong"! I was always told that Barry's father changed the spelling because of what his father (William) did... left them with the second wife (my grandmother - Sarah (MacDonald) WHETEN)

Information from Bill WHEATON 21/2/2011

The following information was provided by Cristi Wheaton presently of Kings County, NB.

Ephraim was born abt. 1760 and he died abt 1832.  He had three wives.  Altogether Ephraim had 18 children.  I had information on 11 of them and I had a binder of several Wheatons I believed belonged to my tree but I had not proven where they fit in.  Then, I hit a gold mine at the NB archives.  After Ephraim's death his children were all sued by Mayes CASE as Ephraim supposedly had borrowed some money from Mays CASE and had not paid it back.  The document named each child by name in several places in the document.  The children answered on four separate answers.  All of the children who were under 21 years of age were on one answer,  the children living in Saint John were on one, the ones living in the country were on one and John was on one alone.  They all answered the same saying that Ephraim had a bond as security for the loan.  What really interested me was why the four separate answers.  The children underage made sense since a guardian answered on their behalf but why were the others on three separate documents and where was John. I could not find any info on him.  One day I was playing with the Kent County WHETENs, putting them into a tree so I could keep them straight when it occurred to me that they were the only family of WHETENSs who spelled their name the same as our family.   Also John was the right age to be Ephraim's son and was it coincidence that John named his own son Ephraim or did he name him after his father?  About the same time Jeff LEGERE, another member of the family who lives nearby discovered Ephraim's father and brothers and sisters.  In the document he found it stated that Ephraim's sister settled in St Anne which just happens to be in Kent County.  I went back to John's answer in the legal suit to see if I could find a clue to link him to Kent County and then I found it.  I had John's signature and all I needed was John of Kent County's signature to prove or disprove my theory.  I thought it should be easy to find his signature since he was a judge.  Also in John's answer he was represented by J W WELDON.  I looked in the Kent County GenWeb and there was a John Wesley WELDON buried in the same grave yard as John WHETEN.  At the top of the page it mentions "buried at Richibucto are John Wesley WELDON, a justice of the Supreme Court and MPP for Kent".  I did get back to the archives and I found John's signature and you guessed it, it matched!  I don't need to tell you how excited I was and proud too.  I've been in contact with others researching the Kent County WHETENS and they never had gotten past John before I found the link.  Of course I came at it from the opposite angle.  And, John is William Thomas Pagan WHETEN's father.

This is the only census record we have for this famiy.  There was no census prior to this year.  The records indicate that they were "native" meaning born in New Brunswick (but it could also have indicated Nova Scotia).  The religious affiliation is also questionable since the Wheaton line seems to be pretty much Baptists".

A study if the Village of Salisbury does show a number of inns because Salisbury was a railroad town.  An 1862 map of Salisbury shows property owned by a B A Wheaton.  An 1878 map of Salisbury shows property owned by J A Wheaton and W A Wheaton.

Information from Murray WHETON 7/6/2011

To state it in simpler terms; my grandfather (William Owen Wheten) had 2 wive's that he married and 1 he did not. He had 9 plus 9 children with the first two wive's, and 4 with a third women that he "ran off" with.

Also at the same address was Ida DOUTEWRIGHT (15) General Servant, Baptist

1901        Moncton, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada (from ancestry, com)

and Information from Robert BOURNS 17/12/2006

Living with him was wife Margaret and sons George and Cifford

The family is missing and Bill WHEATON was unable to locate them anywhere in New

Brunswick.  There are no burial records he could find on any of them so one must

assume they left the Province of New Brunswick by 1901, although the census often

                missed people.

Bill WHEATON thinks it is safe to assume that William Marshall WHEATON took his

family to Nova Scotia sometime after the 1891 census which explains why there are no

burial records in new Brunswick, and possibly answers the nagging question of where

                his father came from.

1911        Lumberland, Port Greville, Nova Scotia, Canada

Notes from Bill WHEATON 8/10/2001

It appears William and Margaret (WILSON) started a new family with four more children after the last census.  William Marshall (WHEATON) had become a Presbyterian and is now employed as a teamster where he was listed as a farmer before,  He must have been doing fairly well to afford a servant.  The four younger children were probably a handful for Margaret.

Information from Murray WHETON 7/6/2011

To state it in simpler terms; my grandfather (William Owen Wheten) had 2 wive's that he married and 1 he did not. He had 9 plus 9 children with the first two wive's, and 4 with a third women that he "ran off" with.

Notes for William Henry WHEATON:

Notes from Bill WHEATON

William Henry WHEATON met E Dora GRAY at Roxbury Baptist Church

"Came to Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1890s after the 1891 census was taken.  Since Salisbury was a railroad town, it would have been very easy for him to travel to Boston by rail".

In 1891 William H WHEATON was still in New Brunswick.  He must have left shortly after this.  This was a time in New Brunswick when the economy was poor.  The timber industry had been trhiving, supporting shipbuilding, but the introduction of metal hull ships had a large impact on this industry.

Notes for Jack WHEATON:

Information from Murray WHETON 7/6/2011

To state it in simpler terms; my grandfather (William Owen Wheten) had 2 wive's that he married and 1 he did not. He had 9 plus 9 children with the first two wive's, and 4 with a third women that he "ran off" with.
