Generation No. 3

4.  Thomas3 WHEATON (William2, William1)65,66,67,68 was born Abt. 1774 in Newton Poppleford, Devon69,70,71, and died 14 November 1851 in 152 High Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, Middlesex Age 7772.  He married Elizabeth WINSOR73 6 February 1800 in Littleham (Exmouth) Devon73.  She was born Bet. 1778 - 178774,75, and died 7 March 1848 in Admason's Yard, High Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, Middlesex Age 7076,77.

Notes for Thomas WHEATON:

Addresses

1841        Pleasant Row, Marylebone, St Pancras, Middlesex

I was also given the following address for this Thomas, but now having found the above it is                     obviously incorrect

1841        Town, Tallerton, Devon with an Elizabeth WHEATON, Age 54, Independent, not born

                                in Devon

1851        152 Flight Street, Hamstead and Pancras, Middlesex

In 1851 Thomas WHEATON was shows on the census as Father-in-Law, widower.  First in the house on the census was Mary Ann PLANT, (see name of person present at death so this is probably a misreading of FLINT) unmarried, daughter, age 17.  Was, therefore, Thomas her step-father?  Also in the property was Elizabeth CITTERN a niece from Twyford, Buckinghamshire, and a nephew, William ROGERS from Charndon in Buckinghamshire.  There was also a servant from the same place.

On the IGI there is the following entry:

WHEATON Mary Ann married Thomas PLANT on the 26 November 1832 at All Souls, St Marylebone, Middlesex. Several members of the family of Thomas and Elizabeth married at this church.  This would then suggest that the "daughter" on the 1851 census could have been the daughter of Mary Ann WHEATON and Thomas PLANT.  However, a Mary Ann has not yet been found as daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth.

As Mary Ann is shown as "daughter" on the 1851 census it is likely that Elizabeth CITTERN and William ROGERS are the niece and nephew of Mary Ann's father, rather than of Thomas WHEATON.  Further research required.

Notes for John WHEATON:

I could not find John WHEATON born 1781 on the 1851 census for New Brunswick.  I looked for others in Charlotte County but there were no other WHEATONs there in 1851

In 1861 in St Patrick, Charlotte County, New Brunswick there was the following family:

Hannah WHEATON      F  Head of Family 63 born Nova Scotia

Anna WHEATON          F  Daughter           19 born Native

Thomas M WHEATON M Son                    17 born Native

They were the only WHEATONs in Charlotte Co. in 1861

In 1871, none of them listed are in New Brunswick

Decided to search for other names on 1851 without the WHEATON, and using the name Thomas.... I have found him!

Information received from Su UNDERDOWN 5/5/2010

I wonder if you recognise a George WHEATON from Southerton in Devon?

George was born around 1833, married Thirza about 1855. Thirza died in October 1877 and George then married Emma. They lived at Brownings Farm and Hoppins Farm at Southerton, Devon. George is recorded as a Carpenter for most of his life but finally as a Market Gardener. One of his son's, George or Frank was sent to Australia for stealing a pair of shoes!

I would be grateful for any relevant information.

For the record George and Thirza would be my great, great grandparents.

Thomas gives his age as 36 (born 1845) and his place of birth as Somerton, Middlesex.  The ages of his children, and the places in which they were born also differ.  More research is required to determine whether he has given the correct information, and the details collected are incorrect, or whether Thomas was not always accurate in remembering dates and place.  As I have since sorted out most of the WHEATONs, although details given by Thomas are not always accurate, there are no other entries for any other children which match those in this family.

Information from Sylvia GAFFNEY 23/1/2006

The family moved from the London area to Leicester to find work, but there wasn't any, so they travelled to Irlam in the 1890s to help build the Manchester Shop Canal.

1901        79 Dixon Street, Swindon, Wiltshire

On the 1871 Census the family of Jonathan and Julia include a Jessey age 2m.

On the 1881 Census the family did not include a Jessey (for whom no death entry has been found).  Instead there was a "Lusey", or maybe a "Susey", age 10.

On the 1891 Census there was a Jessey age 19 in Harpford, servant

M BROWIING believes that the childs's name was Jessey.

To add to the confusion, there is a marriage for a Jessy Emily.  The information has been included for this Jessy until proved otherwise.  22/9/2006  Details from the marriage certificate have now been sent by Terry BARLOW which confirma this is the right person and correct marriage.
