1801 in Duchess, New York, USA7,8. She was born 11 November 1784 in Stratford,

Notes
for William WHEATON:
From
the following notes, and from the information for various members of this
family it will be obvious that there are several discrepancies in the details
shown. I understand from several sources
that the places of births for the children of William and Orpha BROOKs have not
been verified by them. With Rebecca and
Olive born in the same year in a different month and day does indicate that
more research is required. Also, with
two children names Miles B WHEATON, surely the first one died? I have shown
this on the file, but I have received details of his descendants from one
contributor. However, as I have been
sent the information I cannot verify it myself, so I have kept the details on
the file and hopefully, at some time, someone will provide the correct
information, verfied from the actual source materials.
I had
two dates for the death of William, 1851 or 1857. I have now received the following information
from Mary Ann MATLOCK
"We
found William WHEATON listed in the New York state census of 1855 still living
age 76 with Orpha age 70. They were
living with their son Silas in Erin, Chemung Co., New York."

Joe
KELLY shows William born 29 January 1779 in Brnaford, New Haven Co.,
Connecticut, USA and death 29 March 1851 in Town of Neversink, Sullivan Co.,
New York, USA. The marriage date is
shown as 1802
Other
information from Joseph KELLY
William
was listed as Mortgagee in 1847 in Sullivan Co., Town of Neversink and Asa
Hodge as Mortgagor.
A
source in Rootsweb gives his birthdate as 1/30/1779 and birthplace as Dutchess
Co., N.Y. Another source from Lucy
Weaver gives his place of birth as Westchester Co., N.Y. Another source from Lucy Weaver (info from
Travis Wheaton) states that the DOD of William was 11/29/1857 in Erin,
N.Y. He was buried in the Old Scotch
Town Cemetery.
The
William Wheaton family was living in Neversink, and Daniel Brewer and family
became neighbors and good friends. William and his sons were coopers by trade.
They worked with the Brewers and taught them this trade. Daniel and his sons
became fine artisans in this field, and it is said that the Brewers could make
anything from wood. They could fashion anything from a wagon to a wedding ring.
In
the year 1850, the U.S. Census finds Daniel and Lydia Brewer (they had a son
Lewis who m. Bethenia, dau. of Wm. and Orpha Wheaton), with three unmarried
children, in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. William and Orpha Wheaton,
living with their daughter Rebecca Devoo, in Woodhull, Steuben County, where a
Branch of the Church (Latter Day Saints) was established, presided over by one
of the sons of William Wheaton. This proved to be a great blessing to both the
Wheaton and Brewer families, for there were many members baptized into the
church here in this branch."

The
Saints' Herald, Vol.38, p.47, 1891 January 17th.
WHEATON--
Sarah Ann Wheaton died at Galien, Michigan, January 2nd, 1891. She arose New
Year's morning in her usual health, went to the bed of her grandson, Charles
Green Jr., gave him his birthday flogging, made herself an apron in the
forenoon, after dinner called on her son Reuben and other villagers, and
returned home late in the afternoon and between five and six was taken ill. Her
suffering became almost unbearable soon and a medical adviser was called in,
who administered morphine freely. She soon became more or less stupified
through the drug. The doctor was summoned to her aid frequently during the
night, but her tired spirit fled next morning at seven. There was an immense
concourse at the funeral Sunday morning at Blakeslee's Hall. She had met with
the Saints there often and for many years. Bro. Willard J. Smith and the writer
conducted the obsequies, the later delivering a forty minutes discourse from
the text: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his
saints."-Psalms 116:15. She was born in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New
York, October 10th, 1817. Her maiden name was Butler. She married Jacob Wheaton
about fifty-five years ago, by whom she had eight children, five daughters, and
three sons. Her husband died in this county in 1859, and only one daughter and
two sons survive to morn her loss. Herself and her husband were baptized in the
first organization sometime in the forties in New York. She was immersed and
confirmed into the Reorganization at Royalton, Michigan, in 1861, by James
Blakeslee, and stood firm in the faith during her long, industrious provident,
devoted career.

Mrs.
Keen Discusses 'First Love'
GALIEN
- Mrs. Emma Keen, descendent of one of the first families to settle in Galien,
spent a sunny afternoon last week recalling the early days of Galien.
When
asked her age, she replied, "Oh, my goodness, I wouldn't tell you that,
I've forgotten it anyway."
Mrs.
Keen showed no desire to talk about herself. She did have considerable to say
about her first love - the Galien Township Memorial Library and the two
libraries which preceded the dedication of the present library in 1954.
She
described how the first library in the back of he town hall grew until it
overflowed into the front of the building. The library continued to grow and
then one day, when the old high school building was vacated, she mentioned to
the "right person" that the spot would be ideal for a library.
From
then on until the new library was dedicated, it was hard work, but well worth
it, Mrs. Keen recalls. What most folks didn't know the day of the dedication,
was that about 5 a.m. Mrs. Keen suffered a heart attack.
The
long hours spent at the library marking books and helping in any way she could,
had been too much for her.
The
day held double significance for her. She had given a flag pole and base to the
library in memory of her husband, Philip Marshall Keen, who served as principal
of Galien Township School from 1901 to 1909.
"I
thought they would expect me to say a few words, so I had stayed up the night
before preparing a little speech," she said.
She
was taken to the hospital by an ambulance and later that day her dedication
speech was read by another.
She
takes things a little easier now but continues to do a great deal of reading.
"Thank goodness my eyes are still good," she smiled.
Mrs.
Keen, who is as active as many women 20 years younger than she, was awarded her
master of arts degree from Columbia University, New York.
She
has been an avid reader since five-years-old. She said, "My mother didn't
want me to start school when I was five, so my father bought the first and
second grade readers and I had read them both before I started school. The
first year I made three grades and graduated from Galien High school before I
was 16-years-old.
She
earned her life certificate from Yipsilanti Normal and her bachelor's degree in
pedogogy and arts from the University of Michigan.
She
recalls that her romance with Mr. Keen started while she was attending
Ypsilanti Normal and he the University of Michigan. "We were really school
people," she added.
She
lives in the same house where she was born, 122 Cleveland Ave., the main street
of Galien. "My grandparents settled in Royalton Township. When my
grandmother Sarah Ann (Butler) Wheaton was widowed, she brought her family here
in 1860 and bought these lots. The house was built in 1863. She grew up in the
house with her parents, Rubin Bradford and Mary Ellen (Dolph) Wheaton. [and
brother Clark Eugene Wheaton]
Her
father was a contractor. "He and my uncle [John Ross ] built the Methodist
Church here in Galien," she said.
Mrs.
Keen said she could remember two big fires in downtown Galien. The first one
happened when she was quite young. The second one about 1909 took all the
buildings on the north side of the railroad tracks.
"Folks
here abouts believed the fire was started when some one tired to rob
Blakeelee's store. It was the only bank in town and people thought the fire got
started when an attempt was made to blow up the safe.
There
was no fire apparatus in town. They covered our house with wet blankets to
prevent the fire from spreading."
At
the conclusion of the interview, Mrs. Keen, inquried if we had seen the new
library. Upon hearing our answer, she said "Shame on you. Come back some
time and I'll take you on a personal tour."
