Notes for Sarah CHITTENDEN:

There was a Sarah CHITTENDEN shown as age 60 on the 1841 Census.  Given that ages were rounded up this could be the same Sarah as I have not been able to find a marriage for her.  However, I do not know if the Sarah on the 1841 was married or not, so further research is required.  Details are below:

1841        York Street, Ramsgate, Kent

Sarah CHITTENDEN Inn Keeper with servant Harriet CARS (19) and Inn Keeper Edward

ANDERANT(?) (34) and his wife Mary (31).  Also three others.

Notes for Thomas CHITTENDEN:

In the transcript of the Parish Register the mother of Thomas is shown as Mary.  Between 1796 and 1814 there had been 10 children baptised with parents John and MARY.  At the time of her burial Sarah CHITTENDEN was shown as having a son Thomas.  Therefore, it is believed that an error has been made and that Thomas was the son of John and SARAH and that the error was due to the frequency that John and Mary had been written in previous years.

John Maynard TERRY and his son John TERRY worked at, and lived next door to, the Tomson and Wotton Brewery in Queen Street, Ramsgate, Kent.

This famous Brewery had been established since the time of Elizabeth I and had been in Queen Street since the end of the 16th century. In 1635 the "messuage and dwelling house, malthouse, brewhouse, barns, stables and fifty acres of land" were sold for £250 and were finally acquired by the mariner, Thomas Tomson in 1680. The Wotton family became linked with the firm in 1854 during the years that John Maynard TERRY worked for the company.

Tomson and Wotton became one of the two largest breweries in East Kent before being taken over by Ind. Coope and finally being closed down in 1968.

In 1851 John Maynard TERRY his wife and seven children were living at 27 Queen Street, with William TOMSON Brewer and Maltster at number 28. William TOMSON had a wife and five children, and was looked after by five servants. By the December of 1851 John and his family were living at No. 28 although they had left by 1871.

There is no proof as yet that this Athalinda CHITTENDEN belongs to this family.  However, it is such an unusual name, the county is correct, and there is a space in the family, so she has been included for the present.  I could find no marriage on the FreeBMD site.  Nor could I find her on the 1881, 1891 or 1901 census.  More research required, which has now been done, see address above

There are no Flora CHITTENDEN births.  However, it appears that there is only the family of Ambrose in the Ipswich District and the only birth not found is for Flora, whilst the only birth registered and not included in Ambrose's family is for Ethel May,  It has been assumed, therefore, that she was registered as Ethel May but called Flora by the family and this was the name used when completing the census return.  Details have been entered here on this basis until further information is received.

There are no Flora CHITTERDEN deaths between 1891 and 1901

The only Ethel May death is in the London City District, London in December quarter 1898 age 6.  The name, date and age are suitable, but why London City District?

"SUICIDE AT BERMONDSEY

On Wednesday evening Mr. William CARTER coroner for East Surrey, held an inquiry at the St. George’s Tavern, Fort Road, Bermondsey, as to the death of John TERRY aged 49, by occupation a ship’s fireman, and lately residing at No. 6, Ridge Street, Bermondsey.

Mary Ann TERRY deposed that the deceased was her husband. He had not done any work since last October, through an affection of the spine brought on by overwork. In consequence of his inability to work, witness had to go out to work to maintain the family. This fact seemed to prey on the deceased’s mind, and he often remarked that he would not trouble witness much longer. On Monday night, (Bank Holiday), witness left him at home when she went out to nurse an invalid, and on returning home at 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning was alarmed at finding bedroom door locked. She called in a policeman and on an entrance being gained the deceased was found dead.

Police constable Edward GULLIVER 359 M, stated that he was called to 6, Ridge Street, by the last witness, and found the front room on the ground floor locked from the inside. Witness gained entrance to the room by the front, and on entering found the deceased in a sitting posture on the floor by the bedside, with a plaid scarf round his neck, the other end of which was fastened to the top rail of the bedstead. Witness cut the scarf and sent for medical aid, but on the arrival of the doctor, life was pronounced extinct.

The jury returned a verdict of suicide while mentally deranged."

July/August 2010

Recently I have had several messages from Ginger HOLINKA and Jessica COLEMAN from Australia.  Jessica is descended from a Thomas TERRY whose grandmother was Jessie Sophie TERRY.  There are two alternative Thomas TERRYs and despite many searches we still can't come to a conclusion as to which Thomas is the right one!  What I think is below and that is how I have amended my details….

TERRY 0401

Thomas TERRY and Jessie Sophie GRAY had (amongst others) two sons..

Theodore Arthur James TERRY who married Florence Jane PILCHER and

Augustus Herbert James TERRY who married Elizabeth TIBBOTT

Both brothers had a son Thomas..

I think Theodore's was born 20 February 1906 36 Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey and

Augustus's was born 5 December 1905 Bermondsey, London

(although Ginger and Jessica think the other way round...see below for details).

One of the Thomases went to Australia in 1923 age 17....so it could be either.

When Thomas married in Australia in 1939 he gave his mother's name as TIBBET...(source Jessica COLEMAN and Ginger HOLINKA) and the information that his father was deceased....although he later told his daughter that his parents were killed in the war.  Of the two possible fathers Theodore died in 1931 (agrees with wedding information) and Augustus in 1943 (agrees with information given to daughter).

Apparently Thomas cut off all links to his wife's family and had no contact with his own....so the information about his father - whichever version - dead before 1939 or died in war - could be suspect if he wanted to cut all links with home.  However, giving his mother's name as TIBBET in 1939 it would seem that he was the son of Augustus Herbert James and was born 5 December 1905.  In 1923 when emigrating to Australia he gave his address as 94 Dennets Road, New Cross, London SE.  I tried looking for that on the 1911 as Jessica suggested perhaps his grandmother lived there but Jessie Sophie was in Bermondsey in 1911 and she died in 1934 in the St Olave District  which includes Bermondsey so I don't think that could be the case.  However, no Dennets Road information came up so no help there anyway.

However, when Thomas was 65 he wanted a pension so in 1971 obtained a birth certificate (copy held by Jessica and Ginger) which shows his mother's name as PILCHER...and birth date as 20 February 1906. And obviously the father must have been shown as Theodore!   What did Thomas think when the certificate arrived?  He had given his mother's name in 1939 as TIBBETT, now in 1971 she is shown as PILCHER!  Going on which family I think he belongs to the date on the certificate was wrong and both parents were wrong….. I just feel that in 1939 he provided the information that his mother's name was TIBBET...why would he give that name if it was actually PILCHER?  Did he perhaps think....well...it's a birth certificate…...I can use it to get my pension regardless of the differences?

I have entered these notes for Thomas, Jessie, their two sons, and their two Thomas grandsons.  If anyone can provide information to clarify this problem we would be delighted to hear from them.
