Descendants of John DRING

Updated 8 August 2009

Generation No. 1

1.  John1 DRING1,2,3,4 was born Bef. 16575, and died May 1731 in Warboys, Huntingdonshire6.  He married (1) Mary SMITH7,8 1682 in All Saints, Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire9,10.  She was born Abt. 166211, and died Unknown.  He married (2) Joane HILLS12,13 14 April 1692 in St Mary Magdalene, Warboys, Huntingdonshire14,15,16,17.  She was born Abt. 167218, and died Abt. March 1721/22 in Warboys, Huntingdonshire19,20.  He married (3) Elizabeth WOMERSLEY21,22 1725 in Bluntisham cum Earith, Huntingdonshire23,24.  She was born Abt. 170525, and died Abt. February 1727/2826.

Notes for John DRING:

The eariest baptism we have for a child of John DRING is August 1693 which is sixteen months after he married Joanne HILLS.  However, this first child, and four later ones are all shown with the mother as Mary.  The following eight children have Joane shown as their mother.

Jim BECK and John ROWELL have both suggested that all the children had the one mother, Joane, and that would seem to be the case, given the date of the John/Joane marriage.

However, why was Mary shown as the mother for the earlier children?  Angela EDMONDS has found a John DRING/Mary SMITH marriage in 1682 in All Saints, Huntingdonshire. There are, however, no children baptised in that church for these parents.   It could be that John was married to this Mary, they went to Warboys where they lived for up to ten years, and because the Warboys clerk was used to "John and Mary" he put the incorrect name in the baptism register for the children of "John and Joane".

For the time being John is shown as marrying three time, but it is obvious that more research is required.

Note from John FLINT 24/6/1985

The information about Hannah and Oliver comes from another society member, James BECK, of Colorado.  He pointed out that Hannah was most likely a STOAKLEY.  He describes them as a large, landed, non-conforming family of North-East Hunts.  "They have an ample supply of wills, but a dearth of register entries..."

Information from Colin DRING 25/8/2000

Notes for William SETCHELL:

Information from Kathleen Morgan 23/6/2007

William SETCHELL, who married Ann DRING, lived in Upwood , Huntingdonshire; where he built a mill. He had several acres of land and a few employees.  His mill is in someone's back garden.

I seem to recall not many SETCHELLs at the local church graveyard, maybe a DRING or two. There is also a smaller graveyard at the top of a hill, a little distance from the church, as I recall, the locals know of it. It's where several of my SEETCHELLs are buried. I was only there for a few minutes, as the lady who drove me there had to go home, so I was unable to copy most of the information there.

There was a small book written by the local Upwood history society that spoke about the mill, but, I was unable to obtain a copy.  They do have a more updated one I believe
