WHEATON, Daniel C (b. 11 DEC 1889, d. 30 SEP 1951)

Note: Addresses
1900 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA
Living with them was grandmother Clara BUSH (63) widow born New York, USA
1910 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA as Don C WHEATON; mother Rose WHEATON who
was living as sister-in-law with William F NAGEL (36) Foreman Rail Road Freight born
Germany, and his wife Mae R (34) born Ohio, USA who we assume was Rose WHEATON's
sister. There were also William and Mae's adopted daughters Rosalie (13) born Ohio, USA and
Clara (6) born Illinois, USA. Boarders were Anna DUNBAR (45) Dressmaker by the day, Howard
PALMER (23) Stenographer and Howard CLINE (21) Clerk Rail Road Office, all three single and
born Ohio, USA
1920 Not found

In Daniel WHEATON's Will he mentioned "Daniel, the only son of Leonard".
In Steve PYENTA's records he shows the son of Leonard as Earl with a "?"
I had assumed that this could have been a misread of the name Daniel
Then Donald ROSS shows a Donald as the son of Leonard with the additional information that he taught at Kenyon College.
Further clarification is obviously needed.
However, we now find that the 1900 census shows Rose's son as definitely Daniel C WHEATON.
But then again on the 1910 he is shown as Don C
So we have assumed that Earl was a misread, and that Daniel and Donald are the same person.
And now on the familysearch site he is Don C

FREESTONE, Thomas (b. BET OCT AND DEC 1849, d. BET JAN AND MAR 1924)
Note: Addresses
1851 37 Gold Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
1861 The Fleet, Balcock? Street, Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire
1871 Norton Street, Baldock, Hertfordshire
Boarder with Catherine SIDLEY or TIDLEY (52), Widow, Baker born Bramslow,
Huntingdonshire
1881 Wilton Cottage, Shenley, Hertfordshire
1891 Wilton House, Shenley, Hertfordshire
1901 Cottages, Shenley, Hertfordshire
1911 Shenley, Barnet, Hertfordshire
Living with them was grandson Frederick FREESTONE (11) School

Information from Margaret TAYLOR 6/2/2006
A cousin did some research years ago and found out that Thomas was an illegitimate foundling born in a workhouse in Cambridge where he was taught the baking trade. This information came long ago before computers made research more reliable. (Note from JKW: HOWEVER, I have now received information which says this was not the case. See "Information from Wheaton FREESTONE" below)

My father Robert 12th of the 13 children told me a lot about Thomas but not that he was illegitimate. It seems that Thomas came to Shenley and worked as Baker for the SCALES family, and brought up all his family working for them but when he, Thomas, was 50 the SCALES's son took over the business. Thomas was out of a job with I think 5 children still at home. My Father said that Thomas was held in such regard by Ranks the Millers that they backed him and built a bake house, installed ovens etc and granddad was away. He was joined in the business by his last 3 sons Wheaton, Robert (my father) and James (Note from JKW: See "Information from Wheaton FREESTONE" below). The Family opened businesses in two nearby small towns, and the next generation carried on until the late fifties

I have always been interested in Thomas and wanted to find out more about him. My father called him a scholar, because when he wasn't working he had his head in a book. I said where did he get his books, and it seems that one of the local gentry allowed him the use of his library. From this he went in for an exam in competition with 30 school masters and came top. The certificate exists and was left to my brother who seems to have lost it, imagine!! I am trying to locate it. I think this must have been the beginning of the Workers Education Association. There was I think, among the upper middle classes, a wish to educate the deserving poor. Anyway he went on to become involved in politics and was proposed as socialist M P with Kier Hardy and went to London to stand, but returned to Shenley a bit shook up. My dad said It felt a bit too revolutionary for him; he decided he was a Liberal.

One other thing that might interest you is that Wheaton is scattered through the family as a first or second fore name The only ones I know of for sure are my fathers older brother and his son but my father talked about this strange Christian name in the family. He said it was because the family were farmers and millers in the Cambridge fens for generations thus are legends made!!

Information from Wheaton FREESTONE 28.6.2007
Thomas FREESTONE was not illegitimate or anything. He was employed by the workhouse as a baker. Second paragraph basically true except for name James, that name should be Ernest John (nickname Jainey). Yes, Ranks did loan money to start the business. Thomas had to commit the business to always buy flour from Ranks.

Method used to repay loan:
Every sack (bag) of flour (1cwt.) supplied had a deposit on it. When the sacks were returned (empty), the deposit was not returned but used to repay the loan over a number of years.

Yes, Thomas was scholarly and did borrow books probably from the RICHEE family who were farmers, and who in later years did start a library for local people. He used his education to teach young unemployed men of the village to help them on their way in life. My aunts tell me he did dabble in local politics but no more than that, possibly attending some rallies.

The last paragraph about WHEATON name we know the origin of that. In my searches of FREESTONES I think I may have got back to the 1770s when they were farmers in Earsham, Norfolk.

BATEMAN, James (b. BET OCT AND DEC 1858, d. UNKNOWN)

1871 Dean Road, Newchurch, Lancashire

Living with his sister Ann GREGORY née BATEMAN, with son Willie
1901 883 Primrose Terrace, Rawtenstall, Lancashire
1911 883 Burnley Road, Lumb, Haslingden, Lancashire

A James BATEMAN married September quarter 1879 in Haslingden District 8e 228. In 1881 his wife is Caroline Jane who dies in December quarter 1881. Children are born in 1883 and 1889 according to the 1901 census, so James must have remarried.

There is a James BATEMAN marriage in Haslingden District, Lancashire (where the children were born) in the December quarter of 1883. However, on Ancestry.com web site there are two men, but only one woman shown. More research required.

In 1891 a James BATEMAN with son Willie are living with Ann GREGORY née BATEMAN. They are described as nephew and cousin. However, James is shown as being born in Somersham and with the date of birth it would suggest that it is this James and his son.

In 1901 James has a wife named Margaret. There is also a daughter born 1892, so presumably he married again between the 1891 census and the birth of his daughter

Further research has been carried out which has solved some of these problems
