DIXON, Eli Nathaniel (b. ABT 1839, d. UNKNOWN)
Note: Addresses
1862 2 Queen Street, Woolwich, London (marriage)
Father Benjamin DIXON - Tailor
1868 Charles Street S.J. London
Father - Benjamin DIXON - Tailor (Deceased)
1869 Battersea, Surrey (baptism of Nathaneal)
1873 Blackwall Lane, East Greenwich, Greenwich, Kent (baptism of Frank and Nathaniel)
1874 Kenilworth Lodge, Blackwall Lane, East Greenwich, Greenwich,
Kent (baptism of Mabel)

It would appear that Eli married twice but on his second marriage he has declared himself to be a Batchelor. We have not been able to find any of the family after the baptism of Mabel. We feel that either, he died and Lizzie (Elizabeth) remarried and the children took the name of their new father, or it was a bigamous marriage and he was found out, so possibly the children then took the name of their mother, or they emigrated somewhere which we have not found as yet. We feel certain about the two marriages as to be called Eli Nathaniel DIXON is unusual (the only one to come up on Ancestry) but to have a father called Benjamin DIXON on both and both as a Tailor we think makes the coincidence too great to be two people.

Note: Addresses
1881 Wilton Cottage, Shenley, Hertfordshire
1891 St Peters Street, St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Buckinghamshire. She is with a Richard GIBBS and family a Printer Publisher and
Stationer, St Albans, Hertfordshire.
1901 86 Tennyson Road, Willesden, Middlesex. Frederick is down as John but a Plumber
born Marylebone, Middlesex so think correct person and Alice is aged 24 and born

REDHEAD, Ebenezer (b. ABT 1831, d. BET JUL AND SEP 1863)
Note: Addresses
1841 Ransomes Moor Drove, Doddington, Cambridgeshire.
Father: William (45) Farmer, Mother: Mary (45), siblings John (25), Elizabeth (23), Thomas (20),
Mary (20) Mantle Maker, William (15), Hannah (15), Henry (14), (then Ebenezer (12)), Eliza (35),
and Emma (3) - all born in Cambridgeshire. Living with them was William BEDMAN (20)
Blacksmith
1851 Wimblington, Cambridgeshire
[note on the heading of this Census it was originally Doddington and this has been crossed
through and Wimblington put in - I think therefore I have found the correct Ebenezer, and he
was born in Doddington as the IGI shows and the 1841, this Census says Ebenezer was born
in Wimblington, which I think is what Wimbledon should be on the 1861 Census]
Family on this Census - William (58) Farmer of 78 Acres, born Wimblington, Cambridgeshire,
Mary (56) born Doddington, Cambridgeshire, siblings all born Wimblington, Elizabeth (36),
Sarah (28), Hannah (21), [then Ebenezer 20), Emma (12) and Sarah (5). Living with them was
Joseph GRIMWOOD (15)servant also born Wimblington, Cambridgeshire.
1861 Only Ebenezer REDHEAD was born 1832 in Wimbledon, Cambridgeshire, was an Ag Lab
but no details given as to status but was Cousin to Head of House. No wife present.
Park Lane, Leverington, Cambridgeshire
Living with Henry REDHEAD (32) Farmer of 76 acres employing 2 men born Wimbledon,
Cambridgeshire, his wife Mary (32) Farmer's wife born March, Cambridgeshire, children
Elizabeth G (5) born Wimbledon, Cambridgeshire, Fanny M (3) and Edward G (3 months)
born Leverington, Cambridgeshire. Servants were Julia KILBURN (21) House Servant
born Wells, Norfolk and John WINTER (16) Carter born Newtown, Cambridgeshire

(This gives the problem of the relationship, I would have thought again the birth places should
be Wimblington, but this Henry ties up with the Hanry on the 1841 and IGI baptism and would
mean that Ebenezer was really the brother of Ebenezer not his cousin, However as Ebenezer
is an uncommon name and is the only one that appears on the 1841 and 1851 Census and the
only one in Cambridgeshire on the IGI, and I would think that this is the same Ebenezer on all
three Censuses.)

IGI Baptism. Parents down as William and Mary REDHEAD.
IF this is the correct Ebenezer REDHEAD which I believe it is there were the following children for William and Mary (including Ebenezer)
Elizabeth REDHEAD baptised 6th January 1817 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Sarah REDHEAD baptised 31st March 1822 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Hannah REDHEAD baptised 18th July 1824 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
William REDHEAD baptised 8thJanuary 1826 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Henry REDHEAD baptised 5th April 1829 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Ebenezer REDHEAD baptised 9th January 1831 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Robert REDHEAD baptised 2nd February 1834 Doddington, Cambridgeshire
Eliza REDHEAD baptised 5th September 1836 Doddington, Cambridgeshire

Information from Min FIELD
"Mum gave Philip a medal at the time Ernest was killed. It was enamel in the shape of a miniature iron cross with a "W" in the centre" - which is what my notes say. However, it is now too late to ask Min to explain more fully.

We do have a miniature iron cross with a "W" in the centre which was given to us by Philip FIELD, so we assume this is the same item. Philip FIELD wrote that his mother gave him the medal about 1986 and told him that her mother received it from the Army shortly after Ernest was killed in 1916. "However, from the date on the medal being 1914 this cannot be true as a supposedly "death" medal. I think that it is probably a German miniature (or dress) Iron Cross, given to someone ....." (rest of letter now lost!)

We did show the "medal" to an expert who thought that perhaps it belonged to a German soldier and had been acquired by someone on the battle field, and then, because it had the initial "W" in the centre, it was given to Ernest. Being found among his belongings the army then returned it to Emma. We shall never know!
