Generation No. 1

1.  Thomas1 POWELL1 was born Abt. 17702, and died April 1830 in Age 603.  He married Hannah BURCHALL/BOURCHALL4 21 October 1794 in St Mary the Virgin, Buckland, Surrey5.  She was born Abt. 1768 in Horley, Surrey6, and died 13 January 1849 in Reigate Foreign, Surrey Age 747.

1795 - 1830     Reigate, Surrey

An unsuccessful search has been made in all the parishes surrounding Reigate for the birth of Thomas POWELL, and in the more immediate parishes for the birth of Hannah BURCHALL's mother.  In the case of Thomas a seach has also been made for POWELL Wills with no results.

It was found that part of Buckland parish was detached, and this area was situated near Sidlow Bridge which is half way between Reigate and Horley.  This goes some way to explain how Thomas (who was baptised in Reigate) and Hannah (who was baptised in Horley) met.  The information about Buckland parish was obtained from a local history book about Buckland and the author was contacted to see if he had any information about large properties where Hannah could have worked.  The estate had been bought in 1794 and ownership had passed through one family until nearly the present day.  However, details of the staff employed was not amongst the archives.

COINCIDENCES!

Jean and Dennis WHEATON moved to Horley, Surrey in 1961. In one of the photograph albums of our mother, Olive Kathleen TERRY (née POWELL) there is a picture of Olive POWELL's family on bicycles.  The snap-shot includes, in the background, a sign post pointing to Horley.  Over the years our  grandmother, (Agnes Olive POWELL née COBB) had talked of relations in Horley but we believed them to be those related to her mother's WALLER family from nearby Newdigate, Rudgewick and Cranleigh.  The POWELL family came from London, we KNEW that!

After Olive TERRY's death in 1983 we began our Family History research, but it was not until 1992 that we found that our POWELL ancestors had lived in Reigate, and that Hannah BURCHALL, our great-great-great grandmother, was christened in the Church of St Bartholomew, the same church where, some two hundred years later, we had the christening of our daughter, Lynne Kathryn WHEATON.

Marriage Notes for William POWELL and Mary POWELL:

On Family search no marriages were found in Reigate or Wimbledon.

The only ones that were possible fits were:

William POWELL and Mary Ann SMITH 19 May 1828 St Mary, Newington, Surrey and

William POWELL and Mary Ann SICKER 8 December 1830 St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey

Sight of the actual Parish Register might give the name of William's father.  Otherwise there are no clues as to whether one of these is what we need.  More research required

5.  John2 POWELL (Thomas1)77 was born Abt. 1802 in Surrey77,78, and died Unknown in See Notes79.  He married (1) Ruth PEAT80 2 December 1823 in St Mary, Reigate, Surrey (see notes)81.  She was born Abt. 1782 in Reigate, Surrey82,83, and died Bet. July - September 1856 in Reigate District, Surrey (possible death)84.  He married (2) Eliza ONGLEY 25 July 1824 in St Bartholomew, Horley, Surrey  See Notes85.  She was born Abt. 180786, and died March 1838 in Age 3187.

Living with them was William KNIGHT (20) Ag Lab born Surrey

1851        Not found

We are not sure whether John married either Ruth PEAT or Eliza ONGLEY. He cannot have married both, one on 1823 and the other in 1824 because the Ruth PEAT's children's births are from 1821-1833 and Eliza ONGLEY's chldren's births are from 1825-1835.  We are not sure if we will ever find a solution to this problem so information about both families have been included showing the two possibilities.

If this John POWELL married IRuth PEAT he died before 1841, probably before September 1837

If this John POWELL married Eliza ONGLEY he was alive for the 1841 census but has not been found on the 1851 census and no death between 1841 and1851 in the Reigate District, Surrey has been found.  The only probable John POWELL death in the Reigate District, Surrey was in the March quarter of 1865.  So where was the John who died then in 1851 and 1861?

Marriage Notes for John POWELL and Ruth PEAT:

We are not sure whether John married either Ruth PEAT or Eliza ONGLEY. He cannot have married both, one on 1823 and the other in 1824 because the Ruth PEAT's children's births are from 1821-1833 and Eliza ONGLEY's chldren's births are from 1825-1835.  We are not sure if we will ever find a solution to this problem so information about both families have been included showing the two possibilities.

The information about the Williams in this family, and that of Ruth PEAT and her first husband, William POWELL, is confusing.

William and Ruth had a son William baptised 1816.  We have no other information for him.

Ruth shows she has a son William on the 1851 census when he is living with her age 30 born in Reigate.  This makes him born in 1821 after first husband William had died and before she married second husband John.

Ages and addresses for this second William are shown as:

In 1841 he is in Horley born 1821

In 1851 he is definitely in Charlwood, with his mother, born 1821

In 1861 he is in Charlwood at a similar address to that of 1851 but is born in 1815

In 1871 - not found

In 1881 he is in Charlwood (as POWEL) born 1816

We could obviously have collected the wrong information, but, for example, the details for the address in 1851 and 1861 suggest that the two entries are for the same William, however, a;though the 1851 shows him as the son of Ruth, the birth date and place of birth are different to that on the 1861 census

Notes for Caroline HEWETT:

I have the death date as 2 March 1882 with a note "check date".  Why I wrote this I can no longer remember!  However, I cannot find this death on FreeBMD; neither can I find a Caroline HEWETT on the 1871 census.  There is a Caroline HEWETT death in the March quarter of 1866 age 2 and I see that I have a death for her brother also on the 2 March 1882.  They are one Pages 99 and 101 as shown on FreeBMD.  Given that I cannot find her on the 1871 census, does this 1866 death belong to this Caroline?  But if so, where did the "Age 19" come from?

We have since heard from David MASSIE that Caroline HEWITT died of influenza aged "2 lean years" and was buried 16 March 1866 at St John the Evangelist, Redhill, Surrey.  So we have now deleted the 1882 Age 19 death information.  So, now another problem, who does that information belong to?
