Descendants of Anthony STEMP
Generation No. 1
1.
Anthony1 STEMP1 was born Abt. 1522 in
Horsham, Sussex2, and died 1589 in "householder"3,4. He married (1) Dowsable or Agnes UNKNOWN wife
of Anthony STEMP5. She
was born Abt. 15276, and died December 1565 in
"uxor"7,8.
He married (2) Joan HILL 13 October 1566 in Horsham, Sussex9,10. She was born Abt. 154611,
and died March 1575/76 in age 31 "uxor Antonii STEMPE"12,13. He married (3) Joanne/Johan/Jane AGATE14,15
19 May 1577 in Rusper, Sussex (possible marriage see notes)15. She was born Abt. 155816,
and died Unknown.

Will
of Anthony STEMPE (Details from Janet ALLEN)
"Antony
describes his wife as Joan and he was worried about the friction between her
and is eldest son Henry. He left
property - Turners and Muttons in Roffey.
This was I believe part of St Leonard's Forest then." The Will
mentions two siblings, John and Thomas, who were not traceable in the records.
Notes
using the information from Janet ALLEN to Margaret JARVIS giving explanation
for the decision that Anthony was Thomas's father.
1. It is known Anthony married at least twice as
one of his wives, Joan, was buried on 28th March 1576 and he had children after
this date.
Who
do we know are his wives?
.......He
married Joan HILL on the 13 October 1566 in Horsham. The only Joan HILL in the parish records was
christened 4th April 1545 daughter of Richard and Elizabeth HILL
.......The
mother of the later children was another Joan.
For him to have married Joan AGATE on the 19th May 1577 at Rusper would
fit as one of the executors of his Will was Richard AGATE.
2. Re-looking at the Will, it is noriceable that
Anthony did not leave monies to either John or Thomas, but to their two sons
both John. Persumably John and Thomas
were "set up" as they had married.
Did Joan HILL supply the money to buy the property? Anthony left Turners to Henry, and if he had
no issue to James and William, and only then to Thomas. (Thomas must have been the "eldest"
son).
3. So, is it therefore feasible that Thomas and
John were children by a first marriage which may or may not have happened in
Horsham (The records are so bad!) I
believe there are two possible options:
.......Agnes,
godmother to Agnes NTGHTINGALL 3rd November 1560 or
.......Dowsable,
buried 28th December 1565
Anthony
could have had by his first wife:
Thomas
John who married Margaret (but where?)
Agnes - possible, who was the mother
of the base borne Anthony
Robert?

Notes
Respecting Halnaker, Boxgrove etc P225
Boxgrove Manor - The Rev William Turner, vicar of Boxgrove, informs me
that 'the family of Stempe (or Stampe) as the name is now splet) are mentioned
in the earliest documents relating to the parish, and have left it only about
12 months ago. They retain a house and some little land'. This name was formerly widely spread in both
divisons of the county, which indicated an early settlement of the family in
Sussex, and renders it probable that they sprang from the ancient Norman family
of ESTAMPES. Well that's interesting. (I
don't know who the author was or when he was writing, but if one finds the Rev
Turner that would give a clue).
